NORMA WORLEY GILCHRIST
Haynesville, LA.
Norma Worley Gilchrist of Monroe, died in St. Francis Hospital, March 26, 2005, joining husband Gil to be with the Lord.
She was born on April 21, 1923, in Homer, LA, and graduated from LA State Normal College where on August 21, 1943 she married, LCDR Arch "Gil" Gilchrist, whom she met while he was attending Naval Aviator Training.
She supported her husband throughout his career as a Navy pilot and raised three children in such places as Whidbey Island, WA, Charleston, RI, Port Lyautey, Morocco, Norfolk, VA, Patuxent River, MD, and Moffett Field, CA.
In 1962, Norma and her family moved to Monroe where they became members of Parkview Baptist Church. At Parkview, Norma established many lifelong friendships that were a blessing to her especially since the passing of her husband in April 1991. In spite of painful rheumatoid arthritis, Norma enjoyed sewing, cooking, and traveling to Europe, Asia, and throughout the US to visit her children and other family members. She was an avid and accomplished bridge player and, through years of success in tournament play, in 2002 she was designated a Life Master. She was an equally ardent football fan and passionately followed her favorite teams: the Neville High School Tigers, University of Louisiana Monroe Indians, and the Dallas Cowboys.
She will be remembered by her family, her longtime college friends, and her friends at Parkview Baptist and the Bridge House for her thrift, her quick wit and her bright smile. Her family will also miss her nudging elbow and the "Kissy Dragon".
Norma is survived by her son, David Gilchrist and wife Linda of Jackson, GA, son Stephen Gilchrist and wife Myra of Arlington, VA, her sister Patsy Foster and husband Darrel of Lake Jackson, TX, and her devoted son in law, Charles Turk of Niceville, FL. Her daughter, Joan Gilchrist Turk, passed away November 12, 2004, following a heroic struggle against cancer. Norma was Grandmother to Clay Gilchrist of Atlanta, GA, David Turk of St Petersburg, FL, Kathryn Turk of Crestview, FL, Philip Gilchrist of Elkridge, MD, and Katherine Gilchrist of Arlington, VA. Although not related by blood, Jerry G. "Skipper" Riley, of Monroe, was a dependable and steadfast friend to Norma and her children.
Norma requested that there be no memorial service and that her remains be donated to the LSU Medical School, Shreveport. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a favorite charity in Norma's memory.
