He was 22 years old when he emigrated to America and traveled to Conneaut Lake, PA via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes.

Liverpool, May 1st, 1838
Commenced May 1st. 1838      James Hamilton

Liverpool May 1st. Shipped on board the Ship "Peruvian" of Thomaston. "Smith" with 175 passengers for New York at L2..10..0 per mouth. May 3rd hauled out of Fainces Dock and reckoned in the river. May 4th weighed and went to Lea in tow of a Steamer. May 5th [passed?] Cape Clear. Nothing remarkable occurred during the voyage. 

June 22nd came to anchor off Staten Island after a pleasant passage of 49 days. June 23rd Sent Cook and 4 passengers to the Hospital on Staten Island. June 25th Sent the Passengers on Shore. Weighed and sailed for New York. June 24th Went to Board at [???] Parkers[?] 71 Cherry Street. 

June 27th at 6 p.m. Sailed from New York for Albany in the Steamer "Illinois" and arrived at Albany at 8 p.m. June 28th. Stopped on board the Steamer all night and at 10 a.m. June 29th Headed for Buffalo (on Lake Erie. Distance from Albany 364 Miles) in the James Platt Canal Boat, Capt. Gilbert. Paid fare $5 and boarded myself. At 1 p.m. passed Troy and at 4 p.m. crossed the "Mohawk River" by an aqueduct leaving the [....] on the [..........] and at 4:30 p.m. crossed the "Mohawk" again on the South. At 10:30 p.m. stopped at "Chenecdady". June 30th at 1 a.m. Started from "Chenecdady" at 7:30 a.m. passed Amsterdam Standing on the North side of the "Mohawk". 

At 10 a.m. July 1st arrived at the City of Utica. Distance from Albany 120 miles. July 2nd at 11:00 A.M. arrived at the City of "Syracuse" Passed several small towns not worthy of Notice. Nothing remarkable occurred. At 7 p.m. passed "Needsdale" At 9 p.m. passed "Lyons" 60 miles below Rochester. July 3rd at 1 a.m. passed Mount de T[.....] at 7:30 p.m. Passed Bushmill's Bason" 15 miles from Rochester and at 1:30 a.m. July 4th Arr. at the City of "Rochester" where we celebrated the Anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America. Rochester City is 95 miles from Buffalo. At 8 p.m. July 4th passed Irondequoit Embankment and at noon July 5th Arrived in "Buffalo City. Boarded at Madison's Temperance House at 90 Main Street. 

July 6th Ship[ped] in the Schooner "Huron" Capt. Ennis at $10 per mouth. Bound for "Cleveland" Ohio. July 7th Sailed for Clev. O. July 11th Arrived in Cleveland. Lay 8 days waiting for cargo. July 19th Sailed for Buffalo with [.....] of [.....] Arrived in "Buffalo" July 21. Discharged Cargo July 25th. Got paid off for refusing to work on Sabbath. 

July 25th left Buffalo in the Steamer "Monroe" for "Erie" and arrived in Erie at 2 a.m. July 26th and at 11 a.m. started from "Erie" with a waggon for "Meadville" and at 6 p.m. July 27th Arrived in Meadville 37 miles from "Erie" July 28th [......] for "Conneaut Lake" at Noon Arrived at Conneaut Lake [......] in the afternoon. Arr. safe at Aunt Cooks. Distance from Meadville 14 miles.

  • Lake Erie is 270 Miles long 60 miles wide and 130 feet deep. Its surface is ascertained to be about 563 feet above tide water at "Albany". 
  • Lake Huron is 250 Miles long averaging 100 miles in Breadth. 900 feet deep. 
  • Lake Michigan is 400 Miles long 50 miles wide and 900 feet deep. 
  • Lake Ontario is 180 Miles long 40 wide and 500 Feet deep. 
  • Lake Superior is 480 Miles long averages 100 in breadth and is 700[900] feet Deep. 
  • Green Bay in Michigan is 100 Miles long and 120 wide.
