ABEL RIDER

#6 Abel Rider was born November 21, 1793 in Conway, Franklin Co., MA.19 In 1803 his family moved to Champlain, New York. In the War of 1812, Clinton Co. and Lake Champlain were invaded by British soldiers in what became known as the Battle of Plattsburgh. This account is from “A History of Clinton County” published in the Plattsburgh Daily Press, March 28, 1934 edition: “General Izzard (and the American army) moved south and Clinton County was left to defend itself... As Izzard retreated south the advance guard of the British came over Odeltown Road and occupied our village, and the great army of Sir George Provost, 14,000 strong immediately followed.” There follows a list of soldiers who defended their town and their country. Abel and his brother, James Rider, are included. I believe Abel’s first wife was Susannah Cross and here’s why: - their son William Henry’s death certificate names his mother as S. Cross, however it lists Daniel Rider as his father and I believe Daniel was his grandfather. -Abel Rider and his wife Susannah Rider (no maiden name on the stone) are buried in the Downs Cemetery, in Clinton Co., NY. She died Apr.2, 1842 at age 41. On the census of 1820 Abel is married and living on his own with one child. On the 1840 census he has seven children, four boys and three girls. Only five of these are known. On the 1850 census he lists his occupation as blacksmith. By this time Susannah has died and he is married to Betsey/Elizabeth Churchill. Abel died on Oct.14, 1860 and is buried in the Downs Cemetery in Clinton Co., NY. His widow, Elizabeth, then married her brother-in-law, James Downs.20
