Colonial Families of the United States of America: Volume 4 ISSUE page 214 WILLIAM HOLTON of Northampton, Massachusetts; b. 1611; d. 12th August, 1691; came to Massachusetts in the Francis in 1634 from Ipswich, County Suffolk, England; in 1630 was one of the first settlers of Hartford, Connecticut, and in 1654 of Northampton, Massachusetts; erected by contract the first house of Worship in Northampton; was Justice of the Peace; was the first elected Deacon of the First Church of Northampton; Representative to the General Court, 1664-67-69 and 1671; introduced a motion in the General Court at Boston, Massachusetts, for the suppression of intemperance, the first known in American history; was the first [p.214] Commissioner to the General Court in Boston in that temperance effort; his name is engraved on Forefathers Monument in the cemetery of the Central Church, Hartford, Connecticut; m. 15th November, 1691, Mary ———.
