Burton Watson, 68, former state senator and retired Northern Pacific engineer, 704 Eddy Avenue, (Missoula, MT) died early Monday at the family home. The body is at the Squire-Simmons-Carr Mortuary and funeral arrangements are pending.

Mr. Watson had resided in Missoula since 1908. He came here three years after graduation from the Omaha College of Pharmacy.

He was born at Correctionville, Iowa, October 29, 1881, and is survived by his widow, Clara, at the family home: one son, Lieutenant Colonel Russell Watson, an army medical corps physician stationed at Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco; a daughter, Mrs. Elvin O’Loughlin, Idaho Falls, Idaho; a brother, Victor H. Watson, in South Dakota, and a sister, Clara Orr, Seattle.

Mrs. Watson was a member of the Methodist Church, Missoula Lodge No. 13, AF&AM, Consistory, Missoula Valley Lodge No. 32, Algeria Shrine, Emmanuel Chapter No. 54, Order of Eastern Star, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers.

With nonpartisan league endorsement, he won the First Montana District Democratic congressional nomination in 1920 over the incumbent, John M. Evans. In the general election he lost to Washington J. McCormick, Republican. Two years later he was elected state senator from Missoula County for a four-year term, retiring the veteran Ed Donlan.

Mr. Watson started working for the Northern Pacific railway on the Dakota division at Jamestown, N. D. as a fireman on June 27, 1906.

He transferred to the Rocky mountain division to work as a fireman at Missoula, June 6, 1908, and was promoted to engineer on January 6, 1915.

He remained active in the engine cab until his retirement under the federal retirement act on October 20, 1949.
