Wilson b: 4/0/1834 in Franklin County, NY -------- From Martin Murphy Genealogy http://martinjmurphy.web.officelive.com/default.aspx Sherman Wilson Sherman Wilson was born in Swanton, Vermont (according to his Civil War records) in 1810. Who his parents were is unknown. Sometime before 1832 he had moved to Franklin County, New York, and married Lucina (Lucinda) Foster. His first child, Elam, was born in 1832. Sherman and Lucina Wilson had a total of 9 children-5 boys and 4 girls; Elam (1832), Abigail (1834), Squire (1836), Henry (1838), Addison (1840), Philena (1842), Sherman (1844), Lucina (1846), and Maria (1849). All children appear in census information as children of Sherman and Lucinda Wilson except for Squire. He is never seen living with Sherman and Lucinda, but newspaper articles on the death of Addison Wilson indicate he was Addison’s brother. No census information has been found for Sherman for 1830 or earlier. In 1840, according to census information, Sherman was living in Dickinson, Franklin County. He is listed next to Samuel Foster, his father-in-law. Sometime between 1840 and 1850, Sherman moved to Bangor, where he is found in the 1850 census. Sometime before 1860 he moved back to Dickinson where he is found in the 1860 census. As the Civil War began, Sherman made the decision to volunteer in the army. He enlisted in the army at Dickinson, NY on November 6, 1861 for a period of three years. The reasons that a 51 year old man would enlist in the army will never be known, only guessed. It could have been a love of country, or perhaps a father who wanted to protect his son. Henry Wilson, Sherman’s son, also enlisted in the army for three years on November 6, 1861 in Dickinson, NY. According to his Civil War records when he enlisted, Sherman was 44 years old, stood at 5 feet 11 ½ inches, with a fair complexion, blue eyes and gray hair. Why his age is listed as 44 is unknown. Perhaps he lied about his age in order to enlist and be with his son. Like his son, Henry, he was a member of Company G of the 98th New York Volunteers, led by a Captain Wolff. In March of 1862, as the Army of the Potomac and the 98th New York Volunteers departed Washington, D.C., Sherman was separated from his son, being left behind at a hospital in the nation’s capital. One month later, in April of 1862, Sherman’s son, Henry, was dead of typhoid fever while serving with the U.S. army in Virginia. On May 28, 1862, Sherman was discharged from the army in Washington, D.C. on a surgeon’s certificate for a disability listed as chronic rheumatism. Interestingly enough, his certificate of disability for discharge lists his correct age of 52, and gives his height as 5 feet 10 inches, dark complexion, hazel eyes and gray hair. Sherman returned to Dickinson where he can be found in the 1870 census living with Lucina, his wife, his grandson, Ira, Maria, his daughter, and Harley Remington, Maria’s husband. Sherman Wilson died in April of 1871 at the age of 62 and is buried in the East Dickinson Cemetery on Route 11b, Franklin County, New York.
