Rev. J. Abner Morse, A.M. [Transcribed by Robert Bowen, Rochester NY July 20, 2003 from the original manuscript. The original manuscript is the property of Dollie Wagner, Rochester, NY. It is handwritten in a leather bound journal about four inches by 6 inches and 1 inch thick. It contains numerous entries on other topics. The original entries were made by George R. Richards and later entries were made by various family members. Transcriber's notes are in brackets. Effort was made to preserve capitalization and misspellings.] 1 The Richards name originated at Caeryuwick Marionieth county Wales. The Richards of America came from Sommerset County England descendants of a Knight who came from Wales. The Richards family in Wales and England had seventeen Coats of Arms presented to them for their Deeds of valor and Heroism. On the following Page is the names of the Richards who came to America and the Places where they first Settled and the date of theyr ariveal in America. 2 1. Thomas1 Richards Dorchester Mass 1630 2. Thomas2 Richards Hartford Conn 1636 3. Nathaniel Richards Cambridge Mass 1632 4. William Richards Plymouth Mass 1632 5. John1 Richards Plymouth Mass 1632 6. Edward Richards Dedham Mass 1637 7. Richard Richards Lynn Mass 1633 8. Paul Richards New York NY 1667 9. Humphry Richards Boston Mass 1695 10. John2 Richards Newbury Mass 1694 11. Samuel Richards Norwalk Conn 1714 12. Charles Richards Marblehead Mass 1728 3 John2 Richards and Humphry were brothers. John2 came first to Newbury in 1694 and July the 16th he married Sarah Cheney and in 1703 he moved to New Hampshire and with his family Settled on Piscataqua River about nine miles west of Dover on the present Road to Rochester. Here he or his erected a Strong Garison house which Stood until the beginning of the present century. The traces of it may be found about one mile east of Rochester 4 and makes a spot rendered classical not only for the tragedy there enacted but for its being the Geographical center of a numerous race. Here he and his wife died. He had 8 children 5 sons and 3 daughters. His Sixth child was a Son. James1 Richards Born at Piscataqua 1709 and died at the home of his Son in Camden Maine in 1789. He married Sarah Foss and had at Dover 3 Sons and 1 dauter. James2 Richards his Oldest the first Settler of Camden Maine Born in 1743 and died in 1821. He Settled at Camden Maine. 5 (He Married Betsey Hassen) in May 1769. [Transcriber's note: date refers to when he settled at Camden-"(He Married Betsey Hassan)" seems to have been added later and is written in the top margin, not on one of the light blue horizontal rules] He had 11 children 8 Sons and 3 dauters. Robert Richards his tenth Childe was Born at Camden Maine May the 12th 1780.
