NOTES: Location of birth for John is per his Civil War enlistment papers...I believe he was born in Grand Isle County, not the town. More likely town may have been Alburg....he is not found in the Vermont Vital records at either the local, county or state level. We strongly suspect that his parents are Charles Cane Closson and Mary Bowen, but have not found the piece of connecting paper (there are some Revolutionary War soldiers in this branch, we would love DAR membership). We have found the family "warned out of town"...I'll send it.
Pat is currently visiting family in Maryland and plans to stop at DAR headquarters in Washington to see if there are any leads while she is in the neighborhood.
Migration of John and family is interesting. They are found in Bangor, Franklin, NY in 1850. We have school records for the children Phebe and Wealthy for the Spring 1854 term, but not for the term starting in December. My gggrandmother was born in Oct 1855 in Wayne Village, Wayne, MI. They lived there and in Nankin. We think Winnie and Wealthy may be the same individual, but cannot prove it. Winnie we can find as an adult with parents with the appropriate names on the marriage record, but cannot find her as a child. We find Wealthy as a child, but not as adult. We do have 1850 census plus the 1854 school records. I need to find Winnie in 1860, as she is not with the family in MI.
John's 1st wife died about 1856, she is rumored to be native american...the 1930 census for daughter Mary Ione says her mother was born in "N.S.", since previous censuses say Canada French, I assume this means Nova Scotia. I did check the St. Regis reservation church for a marriage of John and Mary...no record there. John married Jane Wofrom (Wolfram). After John died, Jane moved to be with her family in Parma, Monroe, NY she brought step children Charles and Mary Ione to NY with her. In 1870, Charles was working on a local farm and Mary Ione was with another family, who she said treated her like their own child. She married Sebastian Beck, a farm hand with that family and resided in Greece, Monroe, NY until the end of her life when she went to live with her daughter Lillian in Sodus, Wayne, NY. Charles eventually returned to MI, married and we believe never had children. Phoebe appears to have stayed in MI after her fathers death and married Lucas Daniel Cole. I have been in touch with descendents through that line, but they had no info, nor interest in persuing the maternal line.
