Schwitzgebel Genealogy (and more)

Thanks to documents published by the Department of Bas-Rhin Archives and information provided by cousin Didier Ott, we now know much more about Johannes CRIQUI's family. Updated information is highlighted below.

Johannes CRIQUI (a.k.a., "Jean Criqui" and "John Griggy") was baptized 10 January 1792 in Dauendorf, Bas-Rhin, France. He died on 19 APR 1855 in Suffield, Portage, Ohio, USA, and was buried in Randolph, Portage, Ohio, USA. Johannes' parents were Antoine CRIQUI and Marie Barbara BEYLER.

At some point Johannes changed his surname to GRIGGY--after his immigration to Ohio, according to family lore.

Johannes married Catherine Barbara WEBER (baptized 20 September 1791, in Dauendorf), daughter of Antoine BEYLER and Barbara SCHALCK, on 4 August 1818, in Dauendorf, Bas-Rhin, France. They had the following children:

7. Barbe Criqui (a.k.a., "Barbara Griggy")

There is circumstantial evidence which suggests that Johannes CRIQUI/GRIGGY and his family may be related to Ferdinand CREQUE and his descendants. The similarity of the names and the vicinity in which they lived (Suffield Township) is suggestive of this. I have also found a couple census enumerations of families in Johannes' line which show one child born in Maryland, where all the others were born in Ohio. My thought is that these may have been cousins, but I have found no further evidence connecting Johannes and his line to Maryland.
