The Hughey Martin Morgan Family with Ties to the Pettis, Cooper, Robinett, Murphree, Bynum, Forbes, Duvall and Garvin Families
Hughey Martin Morgan the son of Jefferson and Amanda Morgan was born March 21, 1860 on the Jefferson Morgan homestead 4 miles northeast of Mountain Peak. As a young man he helped his widowed mother with the homestead, but also sought adventure by joining a cattle drive to Kansas on the Chisholm Trail. Mart was drawn to West Texas, but ultimately remained in Ellis County on the homestead. He married Lewis Elendor Cooper in Mountain Peak on August 5, 1883.
Lewis Elendor Cooper moved to the Mountain Peak area in 1876 when her widowed mother Elizabeth Jane King Pettis Cooper (widow of Lewis Bryant Cooper), her brother Moses, and her sister Georgia boarded a train in Macon, Georgia. Elizabeth Cooper became ill on the train and died shortly after the family arrived in Dallas. Elizabeth's brother Dr. Joe W. C. Pettis who was living in Mountain Peak area in 1876 collected the children and his sister's body and brought them to his home. They buried Elizabeth Cooper in late December 1876 in the Mountain Peak Cemetery. The William Henry Robinett family of Mountain Peak took Elendor into their home while she taught school at Mountain Peak. Moses Cooper eventually moved to Jack County, Texas where he married Elizabeth Evett in 1882. They eventually settled in the Oklahoma. Georgia Cooper lived with her Uncle Joe Pettis and with her sister's family, Hughey Martin Morgan until she married William B. Garvin May 4, 1890. Georgia and William Garvin remained in the Mountain Peak/Midlothian area until their deaths.
Mart and Ella Morgan raised two daughters, Sportsman and Emma. Sportsman married Jesse Strickland in 1906 and Emma married Jim Duvall in 1904. Ella was very active in the Primitive Baptist Church at Mountain Peak and Mount Zion, and wrote many articles for the Baptist Trumpet. Her son-in-law Jesse Thomas Strickland (son of Daniel William and Margaret Murphree Strickland of Blount County, Alabama) joined the Oak Branch Methodist Church in 1892, but later joined the Baptist Church with Ella Morgan. Ella and Jesse often walked across the fields to church services. Ella Morgan died in 1937, but her husband Mart Morgan lived until 1954 when he died in Midlothian at the age of 94.
