Hopewell Baptist church at Mt. Peak was organized August 27th, 1871 by brethren Foreston, Center and Herring, with six members, viz: George Moore and wife, Fannie Moore, Elisha Moore and wife, Jane Moore, Almer Moore and John A. More. Elder Herring was chosen moderator and pastor, and served the church two years from 1871 to 1873. At their first meeting after organization N.D. Clark and wife joined by letter. Brethren N.D. Clark and a brother Josiah Hawkins were after while chosen as their first deacons. Elder Josiah Leake was their second pastor serving from 1873 to 1877. Elder (L.M.) Mahany was third pastor and served from 1877 to 1886. In 1884 the association met with them. In April, 1885, Brother George W. Wells was chosen pastor and served one year, Brother Jessie Hill served them one year, then Brother Panrod one year, then S. C. Bailey and served them from 1889 to 1895, then S.L. Knight and served three years, and resigned in 1899, and a Brother Reynolds was called to fill out Brother Knight's time.
Then the church was one year without a pastor. Brother J.A. May was chosen in 1901 and 1902. Brother W.I. McClung served two years, 1903 and 1904, then Brother J. O. Herne was called and is at present (in 1907) their pastor.
The church worships in a co-partnership house, a comfortable
and commodious house. The church now numbers 173; in good working
order and contributes regularly to all our benevolent work.
