GERMANS in BOSTON RESOURCE CENTER

GERMANS in the 19th and 20th MASSACHUSETTS (CIVIL WAR) REGIMENTS

about this information

A few years ago, I started what turned out to be a HUGE data entry project; my goal was to compile a data base of ALL members of the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment ("the Harvard Regiment"), using Bruce's Regimental History. 2200+ records later, I "discovered" the Adjutant General's report "Massachusetts Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the Civil War", which gave even MORE information about some individuals (and in a few cases, contradicting informantion). For example, in Bruce's work, the "residence" of an individual, in most cases, is the locality to which his enlistment was credited, and not necessarily the place where he actually "lived".

A second data base was constructed, using the information from the Adjutant General's report; the two data bases were then searched for names of individuals described as "from" Germany, Prussia, "German states", and other European countries (if the surname "looked German".

Then, because I really didn't have enough to do, I decided that it might be interesting to go through the ENTIRE Adjutant General's report for ALL Massachusetts regiments and snare EVERY individual who was "from" Germany, Prussia, etc., and construct yet ANOTHER data base of "Germans" in ALL Massachusetts Civil War regiments.

Well, I got as far as adding individuals from the NINETEENTH Regiment, before I came to the realization that THIS "little project" was bigger than I could handle! So, on this page, you will find information about "Germans" in the 19th and 20th regiments only.

Column "headers" for the chart are as follows -

NAME -
REG'T - regiment
CO - company - "U" means "unassigned"
RANK -
RESIDENCE - per the AG's report; in almost all cases, Bruce gives "Boston"
AGE - at start of service
OCCUPATION -
START DATE -
TYPE - E(nlisted), M(ustered), D(rafted), TR(ansferred), COM(missioned)
ENDING DATE -
END TYPE -
NOTES per AG - information from AG's report

I've used a lot of abbreviations in the last two columns; hopefully, they are self-explanatory.

IS THIS INFORMATION "REALLY NECESSARY"?

Think of this data as a list of "Germans" who were IN Boston at a given date. There's no way to tell if a "German-born" individual was actually recruited IN Germany OR if he was already residing in the US when he began his service. My hunch is that the former is the case with most of these men.

Of particular interest to the obsessive-compulsive data-gathering Family Historian, is this thought - of the "recruited in Germany" men who survived the war, how many of them actually STAYED in Boston after 1865?
