FIFTH GENERATION

244. Lucy Wilson VAUGHT was born on Jun 1 1860 in Missouri. She died on Apr 21 1921 in Mercer County, West Virginia. These notes have been provided by Susan Chiarello, a direct descendant of Ransom and Sarah Vaught. 2-12-2000

Lucy, according to census records was born in Missouri. Why her parents, as newlyweds migrated to MO and back to Giles County VA I have not determined. Obviously as an infant she along with her parents moved back to Giles County. She lived her early years in Giles County and sometime between 1877 and 1883 when she was married, the family moved to Mercer County. When they moved to Mercer Co. they lived about 1.5 miles from the Gores. It is interesting that she is 3 years older than Granger.

She and Granger had six children. Her first born died when he was only 6 days old. Then she had three healthy children. Then there is a lapse of 7 years before Lucy was born. When you examine just the data it is difficult to determine if those years were times when Granger left to try to support his young family or whether there were miscarriages. Considering that they had children about every 18 months before that, you begin to wonder. For a time in the early 1900's she and her young spreading family lived in Oklahoma. Granger and Lucy seemed to be looking for a better and easier place to raise a family. Pictures of her show a petite woman with small features. Interestingly 9 days before her death Granger and Lucy executed a deed to their daughter and son-in-law, James Sterling Bridges for a tract of land of about 83 acres. The special covenant at the end of the deed reads as such "The said further consideration is that the G.H. Gore and Lucy V. Gore is to have there (sic) Montainance(sic) from the above described tract during there (sic) natural life also medical Aid and a decent burial and all the personal property that is owned by said G.H. Gore and Wife at there (sic) death is to go t0o the said Sterling Bridges and wife.l A further handwritten note in the right notese that this land was returned to G.H. Gore 10/26/1921. She died in Mercer County and is buried in the Gore Cemetery near her son Wilbur.

She was married to Granger Harmon GORE (son of Henderson GORE and Sarepta CAPERTON) on May 3 1883 in Mercer County, West Virginia. Lucy Wilson VAUGHT and Granger Harmon GORE had the following children:
