SIXTH GENERATION

491. Lucy Zell GORE was born on Sep 11 1900 in Mercer County, West Virginia. She died on Nov 12 1980 in Mercer County, West Virginia. These notes have been provided by Susan Chiarello, granddaughter of Lucy Zell Gore, 2-12-2000.

Lucy lived at least part of her life in Oklahoma although the majority of her life, she lived in VA or WVA. She was married at a very young age and even lied about her age on her marriage license (saying that she was 16 when in fact she was 14) She started having children at the age of 16 and had them almost every 18 months.

However, after the birth of her daughter Wanda her huwsband died. She was left with 10 children, the oldest went to work. Uncle Curtis went to work on the railroad to help support the family. The place that the family was living had a large orchard and numerous berry and fruit trees. Of course the family had chickens, pigs and cows. The children remember that the summer after her husband and father died she canned or preserved over 1000 cans of fruit and vegetables.

Although she had offers from various family members, she made every effort to keep the family together. Aunt Charlotte went to work in other peoples homes as hired help and would give her wages every week to her mother.

Daddy and Uncle QT went to stay with Grandma and Grandpa Bridges the summer theif father died. Uncle QT says that Daddy was so homesick during those times.

Aunt Charlotte remembers that Uncle Frank Gore was very good to the family both before and after Sterling died. At one time the family lived up on Hackett's Ridge. Another time they were living and working on part of Uncle Frank's farm. Uncle Frank always paid Granddaddy extra if there were anything extra, such as mending the fences etc. that was done. Uncle Charlie on the other hand was not as generous of spirit. One summer he took Uncle James and had him work all summer in his sawmill, he did not pay him one dime! Needless to say that did not sit too well with my Grandmother.

She was married to James Sterling BRIDGES on Dec 22 1914 in Mercer County, West Virginia.
