William Vaught was b 1813 in Kentucky and d April 4, 1883 in White County. He married Margaret George July 6, 1833 in White County, Illinois.

William's family moved to Illinois from Kentucky in 1817. William was in the Black Hawk War. He enlisted from White County, Illinois on July 19, 1832 and was furloughed on August 9, 1832. He was in Captain Daniel Powell's Company of the Third Regiment, Second Brigade of the Illinois Mounted Volunteers. He was mustered out on August 15, 1832.

William was a farmer. He was appointed Justice of the Peace for Burnt Prairie Township on November 16, 1866 (from the Executive Record of 1866, Volume 11, page 224). William was also appointed the Justice of the Peace in Burnt Prairie in 1873 and 1877.

The Carmi (Illinois) newspaper reported that when he died, his lungs had been diseased for 30 years. William and Margaret are buried in Salem Cemetery near Burnt Prairie, Illinois.
