BURLINGTON — Dr.
E.T. Iseley, son of the late Ben and Mabel Iseley of
Burlington and husband of Normal Laws Iseley, died at the Hospice Home in
Burlington on Friday, December 20, 2002. E. T. is survived by his four children,
Dr. Lee Iseley (Jerrianne) of Philadelphia, Dr. Tom Iseley (Carol) of
Greenville, S.C., Denise Marley (Tommy) of Burlington, and Gloria Hendry (Bob)
of Haw River.
E.T. was grandfather to 14 grandchildren living in North Carolina, Texas,
Mississippi, Florida, Illinois and Tennessee, and eight great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of Nellie Sherard of Burlington and the late Nancy Welborn of Stoneville.
E.T. Iseley graduated from Broad Street School and served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II. Subsequent to his military service, he graduated from
Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham, Ala., to prepare for an effective
lifelong ministry of pastoring. He also received an honorary Doctor of Divinity
degree.
LIBERTY — Mrs. Annie Dare Isley Cheek, 85, of 10703 N.C. 49 South, died
Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002, at her residence after six months of failing health.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at First United
Methodist Church by the Rev. Stephen T. Johnson. Interment will be at Fairview
Cemetery.
A native of Alamance County, Mrs. Cheek was the wife of the late James E. Cheek,
and the daughter of the late John Newton and
Berta Holt Isley. She was a member
of First United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Cheek and Dorothy Pickett; and a
brother, Wayne Isley.
Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Moore and husband, Robert of Burlington;
sons, John Cheek and wife, Lib, of Greensboro, Jerry Cheek and wife, Faye, of
Reno, Nev., and James Cheek and wife, Karen, of Snow Camp; eight grandchildren,
Chad Cheek and wife, Beth, of Greensboro, Michele Sifuentes and husband, Efrain,
of Santa Rosa, Calif., Britt Cheek of Palm Springs, Calif., Sean Cheek and wife,
Junene, of Reno, Dawn Kullberg and husband, Domingo, of Staunton, Va., Jennifer
Joines and husband, Chris, of Liberty, Shannon Williams and husband, Stephen, of
Graham, and Michael Cheek and wife, Barbara, of Snow Camp; two stepgrandchildren,
Kim Keelon and husband, Todd, of High Point and Jill Lemar of Greensboro; 12
great-grandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Betty Melvin
and husband, Stanley, Jean Pike and husband, Kermit, all of Burlington, and
Edith I. Overman of Liberty.
The visitation will be at Loflin Funeral Home in Liberty from 6:30 to 8:30 this
evening, and at other times at the residence.

ELON COLLEGE — Mrs.
Mittie Smith
Crumpler, 91, of Twin Lakes Center, died at
4:45 p.m., Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at Twin Lakes Center after an illness of two
weeks.
A native of Greenville, N.C., she was the wife of the late Junius Allen Crumpler
Sr., and the daughter of Mr. William Richard Smith and Mrs. Susan A. Coffield
Smith, both deceased. She was a retired schoolteacher and was a member of Mebane
Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American
Revolution and the Alamance Country Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John (Mittie C.) Landi of Mebane, Mrs.
Brent (Sylvia C.) Nash of Tarboro and Ms. Patsy C. Isley
of Burlington; a son,
Mr. Junius Allen “Al” Crumpler Jr. of Raleigh; two sisters, Mrs. Wallace (Lena
Mae) Caveness and Mrs. R.V. (Margaret) Morris, both of Greensboro; 14
grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mebane Presbyterian Church
by the Rev. Jeffrey Smith, pastor. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 4 to 6

BURLINGTON — Mr. O. Roland Murray, 78, of 3261 Alamance Road, died at 8:30 a.m.
Sunday, September 24, 2000 at his residence.
A native of Duplin County, he was the husband of the late Mrs.
Elma Isley
Murray, and the son of Mr. John William Murray, and Mrs. Annie Brown Murray,
both deceased. He was retired from P. Lorillard, and a member of the Alamance
Lutheran Church. He was also a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S.
Army, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Richard L. Murray, and Mr. Jeffrey L. Murray,
both of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Jones, and Mrs. Mollie James,
both of Burlington; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. Roe Murray, and Mr. John William
Murray; and two sisters, Mrs. Annie Jones, and Mrs. Bertha Gerganus.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Alamance Lutheran Church
by the Rev. James D. Lockley, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30
minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8
this evening, and at other times at the residence.

GRAHAM - Mr. Winfred Isley "Buck" Murray, 72, of 3632 Bass Mountain Rd., died
sudden Thursday, July 15, 1999, at Duke Medical Center, Durham.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 1999, (b. 15 May 1927 ) at
Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, conducted the Rev. Rick Moser and Mr. Colby
Dickerson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was a native of Alamance County, a son of the late E.A. Murray and the late
Bertha Isley Murray. He was a retired employee of P. Lorillard and a member of
Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Alwilda Holt Murray of the home; daughter, Mrs.
Cindy M. Thompson of Graham; sister, Mrs. Virginia Baker of Snow Camp; brothers,
Mr. Bascom Murray and Mr. Jim Murray, both of Snow Camp; two grandchildren; Kyle
Thompson and April Thompson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 16, 1999, at the
Rich & Thompson Funeral Home in Graham. Other times, they will be at the

BURLINGTON — Mrs. Lois
Lineberry Sykes, 95, of 1323 Kilby St., died Sunday,
June 3, 2001, at Alamance Health Care after an illness of three months.
A native of Spray, Va., she was the wife of the late Eleby Sykes, and the
daughter of Robert F. Lineberry and Mattie Isley
Lineberry, both deceased. She
was retired from the Celanese Corporation and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Eddie (Catherine) Westbrook, Mrs. Frank
(Marion) Westbrooks and Mrs. Bill (Mabel) Stamps, all of Burlington; two sons,
Homer “Bud” Sykes of Burlington and Tommy Sykes of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren;
14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Mabel Sharpe and Wilma Gattis; and a
brother, Tom Lineberry.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by
the Rev. Ken Simpson, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church. Burial will be in
Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening,
and at other times at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Marion) Westbrooks,

STONEVILLE — Mrs. Nancy Isley
Welborn, 61, of 3753 Settle Bridge Road, died
Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at her home.
A native of Knoxville, Tenn., she was the wife of Mr. Richard B. Welborn, who
survives. She was a teacher’s aide at Stoneville Elementary School. She did
volunteer work at the Salvation Army, taught church school and was a member of
the Rockingham Singing Seniors. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church,
where she was as a choir director, Sunday school teacher and deacon.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include three daughters, Ms.
Melissa W. Smith of Stoneville, Ms. Bess W. Marley of Asheboro and Ms. Ritchie
Leigh Diaz of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Gayland Welborn of Elon College and Mr.
Tracy Welborn of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Ms. Nellie Sherard of Burlington;
a brother, Mr. E. T. Isley of Burlington; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Providence Baptist Church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the graveside for a short time after the service.

GRAHAM — Mrs. Margie
Shue Van Hoosier, 79, of 726 Oak Grove Drive, died at
8:45 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at her home after an illness of six months.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Herman A. Van Hoosier, who
survives, and the daughter of Mr. Eddie Lee Shue Sr. and Mrs.
Zephery Isley
Shue,
both deceased. She was a member of St. Mark’s Reformed Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Tammy Van
Hoosier Cole of Burlington; a son, Mr. Jonas N. Van Hoosier of Waynesboro, Va.;
two sisters, Mrs. Viola S. Smith of Durham and Mrs. Edna S. Porcelli of
Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Mr. Eddie Lee Shue Jr. of Graham; and two
grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in
Graham by the Rev. Robert M. Disher Jr., pastor of St. Mark’s Reformed Church
and the Rev. Ben Bishop, associate pastor. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

GRAHAM — Mr. David Gladstone Isley, 65, of 130 W. Crescent Drive, formerly of
Friendship-Rock Creek Road, Burlington, died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19,
2002, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, he was born Dec. 25, 1936, to
William Gladstone and
Mary Bess Nicholson Isley, both deceased. He was the husband for 39 years of
Barbara McAdams Isley. He was a retired farm equipment salesman with Peele
Tractor, Graham Tractor, and Job P.Wyatt & Son’s Co., a former Boy Scout Troop
Leader and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church, where he was a former Sunday School superintendent, former
president of the Lutheran Men in Mission and a former member of the church
council and choir.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son and daughter-in-law,
Frank and Michelle Isley of Burlington; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and
Lonnie Nicholson of Snow Camp; two grandchildren, Lonnie Nicholson, Jr. and
Jackie Nicholson; two brothers, George Isley and William Isley, both of
Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Evangelical
Lutheran Church by the Rev. Bill Hoss, pastor. Interment will follow in the
church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home and
Crematory from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. At other times the family will be at the
home of Lonnie and Mary Nicholson, 1404 W. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, Snow
Camp.

LIBERTY - Joseph Weldon Shoffner, 73, of 5031 Spoon Loop Road, died Saturday,
Aug. 26, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center, after two weeks of illness.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, in Oak
Grove Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Barry Shoffner and the
Rev. Harold Garner.
A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Arthur Shoffner and the
late Lillie Mae Isley Shoffner. He was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist
Church and a trustee of the church and past superintendent of the Sunday school.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ozzie "Mae" Williams Shoffner of the home; four
sons, Weldon Shoffner, Coy Shoffner and Derrick Shoffner, all of Liberty and the
Rev. Travis Shoffner of Greensboro; three daughters, Vanessa Weeks of Graham,
Mahalia Ross and Kim Shoffner, both of Liberty; one brother, John Henry Graves
of Fayetteville; two sisters, Frances Shoffner Lindsay of Greensboro and Mrs.
Herma Foxx of Liberty; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four
brothers, Onzie Shoffner, Rufus Shoffner, Harold "Jack" Shoffner and Junious
Shoffner; and two sisters, Beatrice Compton and Mable Clapp.

BURLINGTON — Mrs. Clara Walker Isley,
89, formerly of West Davis Street, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 1999, at
the Wynwood retirement center in Greensboro after several months of failing
health.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late
Mr. Randolph I. Isley
and the daughter of Mr. Currie Walker and Mrs. Hattie Richmond Walker, both
deceased. She was a member of the Down to Earth Club and a member of First
Presbyterian Church, where she was treasurer of Women of the Church for 20
years.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Randolph I. Isley Jr. of Elon College; a sister,
Mrs. Evelyn Trudy of Baton Rouge, La.; three grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Annie Owens and Miss Margaret
Elizabeth Walker; two brothers, Mr. Richmond Walker and Mr. James Walker; and
two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church by
the Rev. Charles Williams, pastor. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

GREENSBORO — Miss Betty Ruth Isley,
70, of 925 New Garden Road, died at 5:40 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at
Friends Home Guilford in Greensboro after several months of failing health.
A native Guilford County, she was the daughter of
Mr. Luther Lafayette Isley Sr.
and Mrs. Mary Huffines Isley, both deceased. She was a member of Friendship
United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Isley and Mrs. Sarah (Bob) Foster,
both of Greensboro and Mrs. Mary Lou Windsor of Winston-Salem; and a brother,
Mr. Luther Isley of Burlington.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Friendship United Methodist
Church by the Rev. Alvin Horne, pastor. The family will be in the church parlor
from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

BURLINGTON — Mr. Ernest Odell “Sonny”
Isley Jr., 60, of 526 Storey St., died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Alamance
Regional Medical Center.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Vernise Herbin Isley,
who survives, and the son of Mrs.
Ressie
Haith Isley, who survives, and the late
Mr. Ernest O. Isley Sr. He was formerly employed with Culp Weaving Corp.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and his mother of Gibsonville include
two sons, Mr. Frederick L. (Doris) Isley of Charlotte and Mr. Benji D. (Lynette)
Isley of Graham; eight sisters, Mrs. Mabel I. Gordon of Bronx, N.Y., Mrs.
Josephine I. (Mahatha) Oliver of Fairfax, Va., Ms. Pauline I. Summers of
Gibsonville, and Ms. Rubye I. Morgan, Ms. Christine I. Allen, Ms. Nellie I.
Greene, Ms. Willie Mae I. Miller and Ms. Nancy I. Burnette, all of Greensboro;
and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Antonio O. Isley; a sister, Ms. Cassandra
Isley; and two brothers, Mr. Wayne Isley and Mr. Claude “Mickey” Isley.
The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at New Covenant United Holy
Church by Bishop Harry L. Cohen, pastor. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

BURLINGTON — Mrs. Esther Kellam Isley,
90, of 1546 Flora Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999, at UNC Hospitals in
Chapel Hill.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late
Mr.
E.M. Isley and the
daughter of Mr. Samuel Kellam and Mrs. Jessie Oliver Kellam, both deceased. She
was a retired employee of Sanders Hosiery Mill and was a member of Mount
Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Survivors include five daughter, Mrs. Betty Ball, Mrs. Geraldine Myers Mix and
Mrs. Faye Lucas, all of Burlington, Mrs. Agnes Owen of Hickory and Mrs. Shirley
Killmeier of Liberty; three sisters, Miss Agnes Kellam of Burlington, Mrs. Ada
Ridge of High Point and Mrs. Ruth Phillips of Liberty; two brothers, Mr. Harvey
Kellam of Burlington and Mr. Roy Kellam of Siler City; 10 grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Larry Isley; a sister, Ms. Edna
Robertson; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by
the Rev. Gerald Collins, pastor of Black Mountain United Methodist Church.
Burial will be at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery.

BURLINGTON — Mr. Larry Richard Isley,
65, of 410 Shadowbrook Drive, died at 4:32 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Duke
University Medical Center after a brief illness.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Joann Robertson Isley,
who survives, and the son of Mr. John Gorman Isley and Mrs.
Lavonna Thompson
Isley, both deceased. He was the owner and operator of Larry Isley’s Automotive
in Alamance. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Burlington Moose Lodge
and a lifetime member of the Sertoma Club. He had been involved in dirt-track
racing for 45 years. He was a member of Bellemont United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Lori
(Tony) Swaney of Graham and Miss Amy S. Isley of the home; a brother, Mr. Don
(Sharon) Isley of Alamance; and two stepgranddaughters.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Jacqueline Allred; and a brother, Mr.

80, of 3434 Spanish Oak Hill Road, died Tuesday evening, June 13, 2000, at his
home after several years of failing health.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mabel Euliss
Murray and the son of Mr. E.A. Murray and Mrs.
Bertha Isley Murray, both
deceased. He was a retired grading contractor and attended Mount Pleasant United
Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the Alamance Chapter Antique Car
Club of America, member of the N.C. Region Antique Car Club of America and the
National Antique Car Club of America, the Early V-8 Club.
Survivors include two sons, Mr. Archie Murray of Roxboro and Mr. Dwight Murray
of Snow Camp; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Baker of Snow Camp; a brother, Mr. Bascom
Murray of Snow Camp; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Doug “Duck” Murray.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant United
