Present or accounted for until he deserted on November 11, 1862. Returned to duty in March-April, 1863. Present or accounted for until he deserted at Sullivan's Island, Charleston, South Carolina, August 21, 1863. Returned to duty on October 30, 1863. Present or accounted for until captured at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia, May 16, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, May 19, 1864. Released at Point Lookout on June 7, 1864, after taking Oath of Allegiance and joining the U. S. Army. Assigned to Company K, 1st Regiment U. S. Volunteer Infantry. |

family. Her mother was the same

minute to the next what she has been asked or what she is told. But she can remember details from years
ago.

MYRTLE HOWARD ELLIS
Our beloved mother, Myrtle Howard Ellis,
85, of 1417 19th Street, departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at Moses H.
Cone Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be conducted at 3
p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Lakeview Memorial Park with the Rev. Jack
Morris officiating.
Mrs. Ellis was born Sept. 10, 1913, in
Erwin, NC, a daughter of the late Thomas and Louise Tart Howard. She was a
member of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Ellis was
preceded in death by her husband, James Lloyd Ellis; a daughter, Betty Sue
Ketchem; two sons, Bernard and Timothy Ellis; a sister, Hattie Brown; two
brothers, Ruben and Brooks Howard.
Survivors include a daughter, Christine E.
Robertson of Greensboro; three sons, Don H. Ellis, Sr. of Liberty, Bruce C.
Ellis of Yanceyville, Paul D. Ellis of Reidsville; three sisters, Bonnie Sells
and Mable Gregory, both of Greensboro, and Peggy Monoco of Boynton Beach, Fla.;
two brothers, Paul Howard of Greensboro, and Louis Howard of Erwin; 23
grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9
p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home, 300 West
Wendover Ave., Greensboro, and at other times, at the residence of Christine
Robertson, 600 Kenneth Road, Greensboro.

1910 Census living with Mother and Father, Ben and Kate, he is listed as 1 year
old.
James Lloyd's mother
Nellie Katherine died when he was about two years old. He was then given to Will and Jane Stafford
to be reared. He stayed with them until
about 14 or 15 years of age, he then went to Greensboro, NC to work in the
Cotton Mill.
Lloyd found out in Nov.
1993 that he had cancer of the stomach.
He had a few treatments, but then just seemed to give up and let go.

Mr. James L. Ellis, 84, of 1417 19th
St. died Sunday, Feb 20, 1994, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m.
today at Lakeview Memorial Park.
Mr. Ellis was a native of Hertford Country, he was retired from Cone Mills.
Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Ellis of
the residence; sons, Bernard Ellis of Greensboro, Bruce Ellis of Yanceyville,
Don L Ellis of Liberty, and Danny Ellis of Reidsville; daughter, Christine
Robertson of Greensboro; brother, James Stafford of Suffolk, Va.; 23
grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

was retired
from Burlington
Industries in Erwin.
Funeral services will
be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Erwin Church of God of
Prophecy by the Rev.
Michael Johnson. Burial will follow in Erwin Memorial
Park.
Survivors include her
husband, Lewis Howard; three sons, James Lewis Howard
of Erwin, Thomas Howard
of Smithfield, and Brooks Howard of Dunn; one
daughter Margaret Lois
Stagnetta of Goldsboro; one brother, Elderidge
Matthews of Dunn; one
sister, Eula Williams of Sanford; 11 grandchildren; 16
great-grandchildren;
and one great-great-grandchild.
