SALTAR , WILLIAM --------------------- according to Stillwell's NJ Genealogy volumes, came from New Jersey to work in the bank in Utica - although Utica has no record of such. Stillwell also says he and his father, JOSEPH SALTAR (my DAR ancestor from NJ) helped buy land from the indians - I have found no proof of this. I know (from letters we have on hand) that Wm. Saltar went to Utica from New Jersey in about 1805, taking his four children with him. He lived and worked somewhere in the area. What did he do for a living and where did he and his family live? His brother in law - Benjamin Walker (aide and adopted son of the Baron von Steuben) - worked at a bank in Utica and the Saltar family stayed with him and his wife, Mary (Wm.'s wife's sister) for awhile. He lived his last years at Mappa House in Oldenbarnveld with his daughter Sophie Saltar Mappa and died in 1850. He's buried in the Oldenbarnveld Cemetery. Any information about Wm. would be certainly appreciated. -----------according to Stillwell's NJ Genealogy volumes, came from New Jersey to work in the bank in Utica - although Utica has no record of such. STEWART, George Hulse, ------------------------b 11 May 1797, Schenectady, d 12 Feb 1869, Otsego County; m Harriet Stevens of Otsego bef 1825. She d aft 1887, prob Barton, Tioga County where she lived with a daughter. George is in Otsego (1825 & 1830 census), back in Oneida (1840 - which says 15 yrs in Oneida?? - and 1850 census, but I haven't found him in 1820 at all). I have George's ancestry, from James G Stewart, to George b 1739, prob Londonderry (Scots-Irish) to Albert Stewart b abt 1703. One problem is that although George moved to Otsego Co (he's in the 1825 census with Harriet), and seems to have remained there, I find a puzzling census remark that both my gr-grandmother, Evelina and younger sister Emily say they were born in Pennsylvania (right thru the 1880 censuses!) while the next girl down from Evelina, says b in NY! Youngest child Charles (named for Charles Burritt??) is a mystery. At 15 he was living with married sister Evelina in Otsego, but after than I can't find him.----------------------------snowstar@earthlink.net
