Truman Jackson killed on the Sultana. Member of Company G 95th Regiment Ohio Volunteers
The Sultana was a steamboat that transported many union soldiers that had been prisoner of war during the Civil War from Andersonville and Cahaba prisons. A boat that was made to hold around 375 passengers ended up loaded with upwards of 2100 or more passengers. It exploded on April 27,1865 occurred 8 miles north of Memphis at the Hens and Chickens Islands. Killing more than 1,700 passengers.
Many questions have been asked. Why were so many people loaded onto the boat? Why do we hear more of the Titanic than we do of a steamboat that exploded on our own soil?
