Agnew, John (Rev)
Member of the House of Assembly, Sunbury County, NB 1792John Agnew (Rev.), b. 1727, Native of Par of Mary-le-Bone, Middlesex, England, d. 19 May 1812, ae 85 yrs Monckton House, St Marys, Parish, York Co, NB, bur. Maugerville Ang. Church Yard, Sunbury Co, NB; m. Theresa [---], Native of Virginia, USA; d. 8 Feb 1795, Maugerville Ang. Church Records. At her burial, Theresa was listed as "consort of Rev. Dr. John Agnew." He was the rector of the Established Church, par of Suffolk, VA, and remained Loyal to the Crown.
Left after 1776 and became Chaplain of the Queens Rangers, of which his son, Stairs, was a Captain. They were taken prisoner by the French off the coast, and taken to France where they were held in custody for several years. After their release they returned to America, and at the close of the war accompanied the Regt. to Saint John. On disbandment he retired on half-pay, and settled at St Marys, York Co, (1790) where they purchased a tract of 1000 acres on the 30 Jan 1790, for £540.
This tract was situated at the mouth of the Nashwaak River and was originally granted to John Anderson, a pre-Loyalist settler, who named the estate "Monckton."
He was recommended by Gov. Carleton for a seat in His Executive Council, but the recomendation was not ratified. First elected a Member of the House of Assembly, as one of the members for Sunbury County, NB at the election of 1792, and sat that Parliament until its dissolution in 1795, when he retired. He d. at his residence in York Co, at aged 85 yrs, and is buried in the Church Yard at Maugerville, Sunbury Co, NB.1. Stairs, 1758 - 10 Oct 1821 ae 63 yrs, d. at "Monckton", York Co, NB, m. - Petitioned to take over the ferry operated by John Anderson for 25 years, which crossed from Fredericton to "Monckton". ("Monkton" bought for 540 pounds - originally granted to John Anderson, a pre-Loyalist settler. RS108 Pet. of Stair Agnew for ferry (1812) from "Monkton" to Fredericton, originally granted to John Anderson in 1792 Mar 25, for 21 years.)
