Sir John Campbell Allen = of Fredericton, ex-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, was born in the Parish of Kingsclear, York County, NB 1 Oct 1817. He was a son of John Allen, for many years a prominent factor in the civil and military affairs of the province; his grandfather was Isaac Allen, who previous to the American Revolution practised law in Trenton, NJ. Isaac Allen was loyal to the crown, serving as Lieutenant Colonel of the Second Battalion, New Jersey Volunteers. In 1783 he settled in Nova Scotia. When the province of NB was organized he was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court, and continued in office until his death in Oct 1806. His wife a native of Philadelphia, was before marriage Sarah Campbell.
John Allen, Sir John Campbell Allen's father, was in his younger days a Capt. in the NB Fensibles, a corps raised in this province during the War of 1812, and commanded by Gen. John Coffin. That regiment was disbanded in 1817; and he was subsequently appointed Lieut-Col and Inspecting Field Officer of the Provincial Militia, this he did until the office was abolished, and was later appointed Quarter-Master General. From 1809 to 1847 he represented York County in the Provincial Assembly. John Allen died in 1875, at 91 years. His first wife died in 1822.
John Campbell Allen was educated, and studied law with the Hon. John Simcoe Saunders, son of the Chief Justice of NB. In 1845 he was appointed one of the Commissioners to settle the land claims under article 4 of the Washington Treaty of 1842. That part of the disputed territory which became British soil was inhabited by Acadian French, to whom the provincial government refused to issue grants; and from 1845 to 1847 the commission appointed to investigate and adjust these difficulties was engaged in hearing and determining the claims of all settling between the Grand Falls of St John and the St Francis Rivers. From Nov 1851, to Jan 1856 he served as Clerk of the Prov. Executive Council. On Feb of the later year he was elected a Rep. for York Co to the Gen. Assem., and in May 1856 he was appointed Solicitor General, holding that office until the following year, when his party was defeated.
He declined the position of QC in 1860, and was re-elected to the Assembly in 1862 and served as Speaker until its dissolution in 1865. He was again returned as an opponent of Confederation in April of that year, and was appointed Attorney-General, and in June 1865 he and the Hon Albert J. Smith afterwards were sent as delegates to London to present NB's objection to the proposed Canadian Confederation. On Sep 21, 1865 he was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court; and on Oct 8, 1875 he succeeded the Hon. William J. Ritchie as Chief Justice. On 8 Oct 1866 he was appointed Vice-Pres. of the Court of Governors and Council, for determining suits relating to marriage and divorce; and in Jun 1878, he was selected in place of the late Governor Wilmot, as an arbitrator in the north-western boundary dispute, the others being Sir Edward Thornton, British Minister at Washington, and Chief Justice Harrison, of Ontario. But unfortunately his judicial duties would not permit him to enter upon the work, and he accordingly resigned.

He was knighted by Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1889; and in 1888 his fiftieth anniversary as an Attorney, he was presented with a valuable piece of plate by Members of the St John Bar. In 1893 the NB Bar presented to the Supreme Court a life-size portrait of the Chief Justice, which now hangs in the Court room of Fredericton.
