Joshua Alexandre
Gloucester / 1843 / MLA / Church of EnglandJoshua Alexandre was b. 1802, Island of Jersey, Channell Islands; chr. 57 yrs , 10 Oct 1859, Shippigan, NB; bur, St. John's Church, Shippigan, NB.
Educated in the common school of the Island of Jersey.
Engaged in the mercantile & fishing business. Emigrated in NB in 1832, as manager of William Fruing Co., a large fishing & mercantile firm on the Island of Jersey. A large establishment was built at Pt. Alexandre, Shippigan, for curing and preparing fish for export, and which was later moved to Lameque on the same island. The firm did an extensive business along both shores of the Bay de Chaleur. He was accompanied by his brother, John Alexandre. His sister m. Wm. Fruing.
First elected, by Acclamation, at the GE of Dec 1842. Sat until its dissolution in 1846, when he retired from active politics.
From the Miramichi Gleaner, 22 Oct 1859:
"On Wed, 12 Oct 1859, the remains of Joshua Alexandre, Esq., Merchant, were brought over to the west side of Shippigan Harbor, and interred in St. John's Churchyard. The body was carried by three captains & 3 mates and followed by 60 men belonging to Jersey.
"The Rev. Mr. Street, Bathurst, came down and officiated, speaking from 1st Cor. 15:22. 'For as in Adam all die, etc.' A good man had departed from our midst, much regretted by all who knew him." (Copied from "Headquarters", 2 Nov 1859)Ref: - see source list for more proper citation names
