Walter Bates was an author of at least two books, Kingston and The Loyalist of the "Spring Fleet" of A.D. 1783, With Reminiscenses of the Early Days In Connecticut, by Walter Bates; and The Mysterious Stranger (Henry More Smith). He arrived aboard the "Union" as a single male, of Stanford, CT / farmer / 15 Apr 1783.* His name appears as Cornorer and as town clerk in 1809. He appears to have received the appointment of Sheriff of Kings County about 1808, which office he held for many years.
* The first two children (below) seem to have birth dates that implies they were born in the US, which would indicate that although he came to NB alone, he had children, which may have followed him at a later time. It is possible that Frances and Abigail were sisters, and his children were with the grandparents for awhile. The following list of children is probably incomplete, and the marriage they came from is not know in all cases, but it seems evident there were only children from the first two marriages. (?)1.
