Richard Carman, d. 7 Jul 1817 ae 60 yrs, Lancaster, Saint John Co, NB, s/o Benjamin Carman III, m. Sarah Horsfield, b. 1764, d. 1835 ae 71 yrs, York Co, NB, d/o Thomas Horsfield of Saint John.

1. William, b. 1780; d. 4 Dec 1851, Chatham, Northumberland Co., NB; m. Ann Sharman (William was b. 1789, NY and d. 1854 in Chatham, NB, grandfather of Bliss Carman) William Carman moved to the North Shore and became the 1st. High Sheriff of Gloucester Co., NB.
Ann Sherman (1779-4 Feb 1854) d/o Dr. Ambrose Sharman, Surgeon of the Royal Fencible Americans, who were at Ft. Howe when the Loyalist arrived. He later settled at Burton, Sunbury Co, near his friend, Samuel Denny Street. Dr. Sharman drowned in the Saint John River, and Mr. Street raised the 3 Sharman ch. with his own 12.
Their son, William, Jr. (1804-1885) was an MLA for Northumberland Co 1846-1850, and father of William Bliss Carman (1861-1929) the poet.
[? Another of William's 5 boys, Thomas Horsefield Carman & wife, Mary Wait, made their home and raised their family in Bathurst. They had 6 children -- 5 boys & 1 girl. The 2nd child, a boy, unfortunately lived only 6 months.] {Question was this a son or brother of William ?} They had:

3: Thomas Horsefield Carman, Jr. b. 25 Feb 1854, Bathurst. m. Mary Ann Elizabeth Molson. They had 2 children: Bruce & Harriet E. Bruce m. Enid Baird at St John's, Nfld, Apr 1914 and d. 11 May 1933, place ? They had two children, Hugh Baird & Olga Mary Carman, b. & d. dates unknown.
4: Richard Frances Carman b. 18 Jul 1856, Bathurst, NB, d. date unknown.

Richard Carman (Loyalist Came to Saint John in 1783 and settled in Queens Co, NB. ) eldest s/o Benjamin Carman, III (1714-1795) eldest s/o Benjamin Carman, Jr. (a mute) eldest s/o Benjamin Carman (d. 1694) second s/o John Carman (d. 1653) and his wife Florence - who came to Roxbury, Mass. from England, 1631.

William Carman
Northumberland County / MLA / Church of EnglandWilliam Carman b. 26 Sept. 1804 at Weymouth, NS, or Chatham, Northumberland Co., NB; d. ae 80 yrs. on 3 or 13 Jan. 1885 at Fredericton; bur. at Fredericton Rural Cemetery. He was s/o William Carman, Sr. (1780-1851), and Ann Sharman (11 Jan. 1779 - 4 Feb. 1854, m. 4 Dec. 1857. His paternal grandparents were Richard Carman, a Loyalist, who d. 7 July 1817 at Lancaster, ae 60 yrs. His maternal grandfather was Dr. Ambrose Sharman, a surgeon at Ft. Howe, 1783, with Royal Fencible Americans.
He was educated at Chatham public school. He studied law and admitted to Bar of NB, as an Attorney, 15 Oct. 1825, and as a Barrister, 5 Feb. 1828.
He located at Chatham and practiced law until 1851, when he moved to Fredericton. He was appointed a Clerk of Common Pleas for York Co., and Clerk of the Supreme Court of NB, holding these positions until his death.
He was defeated at GE Sept. 1837. He was first elected at GE Oct. 1846 by acclamation. He sat as a member until dissolution in 1850. He was defeated in GE 27 June 1856 and retired from active political life.
R.G. May 21, 1851, to be Prothonotary or Clerk of the Pleas of the Supreme Court in the room of the Hon. George Shore, deceased.
He was first m. on 19 Oct. 1829 at Miramichi to Miss Anne Elizabeth Dean, (40-Eng.-1817); She d. ae 74 yrs, on 21 Apr. 1854, at Fredericton. She was d/o Joseph Dean, Esq. (the late), a Collector of Customs for the Miramichi.
His second m. was on 1 June 1859, to Miss Sophia Maria Bliss; d. ae 57 yrs, 10 Feb. 1886; bur. at Fredericton Rural Cemetery.
From the first marriage he had 6 sons, and 1 dau. (or 4 sons, 2 daus.) and from the second m. 1 son, 1 dau.First marriage:
