DePeyster, Abraham

    Abraham DePeyster; b. abt. 1752, New York, he was a member of one of the original colonial families of New York.; d. 19 Feb 1798 ae 46 yrs, at his residence, Prince William St, Saint John, NB; s/o James (Jacobus) DePeyster & Sarah Reade;
    Abraham m. 1783, New York City, NY, Catherine Livingstone; d/o John Livingstone. His wife and 6 children returned to NY after his death in 1798.
    A Loyalist. He sided with the Crown on the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Was commissioned Dec 13 1776, as a Captain in the Grenadier Company of the Kings American Regt., and was present at the Battle of King's Mountain. Came to Parrtown with the Loyalist in 1783, accompanied by his brother, Capt. Frederic DePeyster, and was one of the original grantees of the city, drawing Lots No. 21 and 103.
    Upon disbandment of his Regt. he was retired on half-pay and moved to Maugerville, Sunbury County. Was appointed Sheriff of Sunbury County in 1785.
    In 1792 he was appointed Provincial Treasurer of NB in succession to the Hon. Richard Seamans, and moved to Saint John. Was appointed a Justice of the Peace.
    His brother Frederic settled in York County, but later returned to New York.

    His brother Frederic settled in York County, but later returned to New York.
