    EARLE - Sylvester, born at Hackinsack, New Jersey. His wife was a Pole, a descendant of the famous King John Sobieski. Their children were: Christine, born August 25th, 1734; Olsey, born January 10th, 1737; John, born June 4th, 1739; Sophia, born Dec. 8th, 1742; John (2nd), born Jan. 10th, 1744; Hannah, born April 14th, 1747; Justus, born Aug. 19th, 1749; Edward, born June 2nd, 1751; Elizabeth, born July 18th, 1754; Edward (2nd), born Nov. 27th, 1757. Justus married Ann Lawrence, Sept, 6th, 1778. Their children were: Sylvester, born August 3, 1779; John, born Sept. 7, 1781; Edward, born March 25, 1783; Richard Lawrence, born July 26, 1785, married Miss Fisher; Sylvester (2nd), born Sept. 29, 1787; Sylvester Sobieski, born March 16, 1791, married Maria Hughson; Justus, born March 15, 1793; Mary, born March 8, 1795; John, born April 18, 1797, married Sarah Cox; Matilda, born May 24, 1800; Sophia Matilda, born April 30, 1802, m. Richard Cox.
    Edward and Justus (or Joste), U.E. Loyalists, came to St. John in 1783 in the September fleet, and settled on the Grand Lake. The former was a captain in the Third Battalion of New Jersey Volunteers, and after his retirement received half pay. His wife's maiden name was Lyche Vandyke [Vandyne ? ]. After residing eight years in Quen's, he returned to the United States. Justus was a Lietenant in the Third Battalion, in Brigadier General Skinner's brigade, under the command of Sir Henry Clinton. His commission is dated Dec. 18, 1781. He was fourteen months in prison, having been taken captive at Ponlass Hook. He died Sept. 22, 1826, and was buried at Grand Point Cemetery. Here is also buried his wife, whose maiden name was Ann Lawrence, died April 22, 1824. All their children died when young, except Richard, Sylvester Sobieski and John. Sylvester Sobieski studied medicine with Dr. Pinkney and has practised his profession sixty-two years, having spent three years of his medical life in Queen's and the rest in King's. He was elected as a representative for King's County in the Local Legislature in 1844, and was for nine years the sitting member for that constituency. His children were: William who married Lizzie King; Justus who married Elizabeth Greenlaw; Sylvester Sobieski who married Catharine Otty; Theresa Sobieski who married Aranda Dickson; Eliza Ann who married George Otty, at present Judge of Probates for King's. William is an officer in the Treasury Department of the Erie Railway, New York. Justus was late Sheriff for King's County. Dr. Sylvester Sobieski Earle, Coroner for the city and county of St. John, is one of the leading medical practioners of New Brunswick. His son, Dr. Thomas Earle, is also a physician of St. John. Abraham Earle, Deputy Comptroller of New York City, is a son of Edward.
    John settled at Douglas Harbour, on the farm now owned and occupied by his son Justus. He was elected representative for Queen's in the Legislative Assembly in 1844, which position he occupied till called to the Legislative Council, in 1852.
    Dr. Earle, the elder, who is now in his 87th year showed the writer a silver tankard, stamped with the royal arms of Poland, once the property of his ancestor king, John Sobieski. He also exhibited a magnificent stock buckle, surmounted with brilliants, worn by his Loyalist father, Justus Earle.

Case of Capt. Edwd. Earle, late of New Jersey.
    He came to this Province in Octr., 1783. Went up the River to Frederickton(sic). Sent his Claim by Hardy. The Claim was delivered here by his Brother, who Continued in this Town.
    He is a native of America; resided in Hackinsac when Troubles broke out; joined the Brit. in 1776 when Lord Cornwallis first came into ye Jerseys. Had a Commission as Lieut. in Col. Buskirk's Corps; afterwards had a Captain's Commission in same Regt. Has now half pay. Servd. all the War. Is now settled on the Grand Lake, Queen's Co.
    Claimant & his Brother, Justus, were in Possession jointly of a farm in Hackinsac. It was left to them two jointly by their Father's Will. His Father had been dead near 20 years... see brother's claim.

    Earle, John (Hon) (1797-1866) Queens County - MLC; MLA
    Born 8 Apr 1797, at Grand Point, Canning Parish, Queens Co, NB. Of Colonial English-Loyalist ancestry. Son of Lieut. Justus Earle (1749-1825), a Loyalist Officer from NJ who served in Col. Skinner's Brigade, and his wife, Anne Lawrence, d/o Col. Richard Lawrence.
    He was educated at the public school. Located at Grant Point, Canning, Queens Co, and engaged in farming. Was appointed a Justice of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. Took an active interest in the public affairs of his day.
    Married to Miss Sarah Cox (1 Jan 1803 - 12 Sep 1885) a lady of Loyalist ancestry.
    First elected to the House of Assembly of NB, as one of the members for Queens County, at the GE of 1842, and sat that Legislature. Defeated at the GE of 1846, but was again elected at a bye-election held March 1847, to fill the vacancy created by the unseating of the Hon. Hugh Johnston, Jr. Re-elected at the GE of 1850; defeated at the GE of 1854; and again elected at the GE of 1856, and sat as a member until the dissolution of the Legislature in 1857.
    On 3 Mar 1857, he was called to a seat in the Legislative Council of NB and continued a member of that body until his decease.
    He d. 20 Feb 1866, at his residence, Grand Lake, NB, aged sixty-eight years. Buried in the Earle Cemetery, Grand Point, NB. Survived by his widow who d. 12 Sep 1885, and was buried beside him. (Graves marked by a marbe slab.)
    The founder of this branch of the Earle family in America was Edward Earle, a native of Lancashire, England, who came to America in Aug 1685, on the ship "Thomas", and settled first in Maryland. He was then about forty-five years of age. His son, Edward Earle, b. in England in 1628, moved to Secausus (Indian Sychakes) Island, New Jersey, about 1673, and d. there Dec 1711, aged eighty-four years. His son, Edward Earle (3rd) was b. in Maryland in 1665; m. Elsie Vrieland in 1688, and had a family of twelve children. His seventh son, Sylvester (1707-1774) m. 8 Oct 1733, Mathilda (Megtel) Zabouriski, a descendant of Alberdt Zabouriski, who emigrated to America in 1662 from Poland on the Dutch ship "Fox" and settled in New York. He was said to have been connected with the Polish Royal Family.
    Justus Earle was b. in Hackensak, éü19ü Aug 1749, the third s/o Sylvester and Matilda Earle. At the commencement of the Revolutionary War, he enlisted in the New Jersey Volunteers, named Ensign 16 Apr 1777; taken prisoner in 1779, exchanged in 1779, and promoted to Lieut. 18 Dec 1781. Following the War he came to NB with his Regiment, was retired on half-pay, received a grant of land at Grant Point, Queens County, and settled there. He married Anne Lawrence, d/o Colonel Richard Lawrence, a Loyalist. They had a family of twelve children. He d. there 1 Sep 1825.

    He is a Brother to Edward Earl. The Claim is entered in both their names. The landed Estate belonged to them equally, the moveable Estate belonged to Claimant. Says he gave his Claim to Mr. Hardy, before Mr. Hardy went to Halifax. He gave it in the joint name of himself & Bror.
    Claimt. lived at Hackinsac; joined the Brit. on their first coming to ye Jerseys. Servd. first as a Volunteer. In Apl. had a Comn. as Ensign in Col. Buskirk's Regt. Had afterwards a Comn. as Lieut. Continued to serve during the War. Has now half pay. Lives in Queen's Co.
    Was possessed of a Farm in Hackinsac which belonged to him & his Brother, it was given by his Father's Will. The farm consisted of above 200 acres on ye survey after Confiscation, it measured he thinks 250 acres. -see brother's claim.

Sylvester Zobieski Earle (Dr.) b. 16 Mar. 1791; chr. 14 Aug. 1791, at (Grand Point) Waterborough Queens Co., NB (Physician - 60 - 1851; d. ae 88 yrs, on 4 Dec. 1879, at res. Kingston, Kings Co., NB; bur. at St. Paul's Par. Churchyard, Hampton, NB. He was s/o Lt. Justus Earle (1749-1826), Loyalist and Ann Lawrence (1752-1824), d. 22 Apr. 1824, at Grand Lake, ae 62 yrs. His paternal grandparents were Sylvester Earle (d. c. 1768) and Matilda Zabouriski. His maternal grandfather was Col. Richard Lawrence, Loyalist.
    He was educated at local schools. He studied medicine in New York and received his diploma.
    He located at Kingston, Kings Co., and successfully practiced his profession there, attaining a wide popularity.
    He unsuccessfully contested Kings Co. for the House of Assembly, at the GE's of 1834 and 1837.
    He was first elected to this seat at the GE of 1842 (1 Jan. 1843) and was re-elected at the GE 1846 (9 Oct.).
    He was defeated at the GE's of 1850 (July) and 1854 (June) but was again re-elected at the GE of 1856 (4 July).
    He was defeated at the GE's of 1857 (8 May) and 1861 (28 June). He subsequently retired from active politics.
    He m. 9 Dec. 1813 to Maria Hughson; (58-1851- b. US - to NB); d. ae 61 yrs on 25 Aug. 1855. Her father was from Poughkeepsie, NY. They had 7 children - 5 sons and 2 daus.

He d. at Grand Point, Queens Co., on 1 Sept. 1825.
