#14 Lumbering Pioneers

On the St. John River the first pioneers in lumbering operations were the Glasiers. The first Glasier in New Brunswick was Captain Beamsley Glasier. In 1765 Captain Glasier was given a grant of land at the mouth of the Nerepis. His brother Benjamin bought a large tract of land six miles below Fredericton and settled there. For nearly one hundred years the Glasiers were engaged in lumbering and shipping and at one time were the largest operators in the province employing over six hundred men.

The most famous Glasier was Senator John Glasier who began his lumbering operations at Shogomoc in York County and then he and his brother Stephen extended their operations to the Upper Saint John. John Glasier was the first lumber men to bring a drive over the Grand Falls and was the first white man to explore the Equatook and Squattook Lakes. It is interesting to note that at this time in the Glasier family history there were many John Glasiers and so Senator John was called the "Main John". Even today the "big boss" of a business is called the Main John.
