A dinner honoring our Citizen of the Day... James A. Noble who recently began his official retirement after more than 45 years of employment at Eastman Kodak Company is planned in the immediate future. Those who know James Noble well point out that he was an executive who through general ability and technical ingenuity rose from the humble position of office boy to assistant manager of Camera Works.Noble is credited with a number of techical developments at the Camera Works plant. These include a lacquer formulation he devised in 1914 that is still effective and in use today, a camera bellows design and bellows manufacturing equipment, and a machine to make carrying handles for photographic equipment. He believes sincerely that his contributions of technical skill not only aided Eastman Kodak, but had community wide effects because each contribution to making a better product enabled Kodak to expand in the market and thus automatically there was most stable employment and a general improvement in the economic climate of the area. He said thatone of the most rewarding aspects of his career at Kodak was the opportunity given him for the encouragement of the younger employees. He said that he had always told the young people who came to him for advise to put in for every helpful idea they could possibly find... for it all aids plant management recognition and that with him was a continuing policy and a vital part of his personal philosophy.
Noble was born in Kendall, New York and attended high school there. later through night study, he completed a New York Central course in telegraphy, served as manager of the old Pinnacle Club in Rochester and worked for a Cleveland electrical firm. At Kodak back in 1905 he began work in the Camera Works Spool department. He rose successively as foreman and department head of several departments through the years, until 1938 when he was named superintendent of process. He became superintendent of manufacturing in 1946, was named assistant manager of the plant in 1952. James A. Noble is a member of the Kodak 40 year Club, the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, and the superintendents steering committee of the Industrial Management Council. He is also director of the Baptist Temple and a member of Freemasons, Rochester Consistory, Damascus Temple Shrine and the Elks.
So with the sincere wish that his retirement years will be many and happy ones--- the Rochester Savings Bank commend.... James A. Noble our citizen of the day.
