Norwegian
skifter - probate records is an article that I have written about this important
source of genealogy information.
The Computerization of Norwegian Probate Records is a very nice
article from NHDC - The Norwegian
Historical Data Centre at the University of Tromsų. The article includes a dicussion about
the history of Norwegian probate records.
A few probate registers (indexes) from a few counties are
available on-line from NHDC (unfortunately in Norwegian). This web site also includes a
scanned picture of the first page
of a probate document from 1840. (Although the NHDC - The Norwegian Historical Data Centre at
the University of Tromsų is a university web site, this is a commercial web site - it offers
probate records, parish records, etc. for sale to the public. However, some of its records have
been placed on the Internet for free).
The
Probate register at the
Digital Archive of Norway
at the University of Bergen has a few online indexes of probate records: "They are registers for the
probate protocols of the district recorder, and for the clerical and military probates. These
databases are only serving as indexes, thus the information is scarce compared to the original
documents."
Slektshistoriske Kilder, 1500-1900 from the Norwegian genealogy
organization DIS-Norge includes links to online genealogy-related databases for each fylke in
Norway, including the probate registers, etc. that various individuals have transcribed and made
available on their own web pages. These links are sorted by fylke. (In Norwegian with some English).
Research Outline - Norway from the LDS Family History
Library includes a brief description of Norwegian probate records. (It is toward the end of the
outline). I would highly recommend that you print out this entire outline and study it
carefully!
