THE HONORABLE JOSEPH PHILBRICK

HON. JOSEPH (son of Samuel and Phebe Sanborn) PHILBRICK, b. at Seabrook, 1772, was a man of more than ordinary ability and education, combined with sound judgment, sterling integrity and decision of character. At the age of 19 he commenced teaching in Jaffrey, N. H., and continued the business in other towns of the vicinity. Having inherited the homestead of his father in Weare, he was for years officially connected with the schools of the town where he resided. He was appointed sergeant major of the Ninth Regt., N. H. Militia, 1801, and in 1807, adjutant, but in 1808 retired from military service. He was in 1807 justice of the peace for Hillsboro' County, and in 1818 justice of the peace and quorum, which office he held till his death. In 1820, he was commissioned associate justice of the Court of Sessions for the County and also attended to much business in the Superior and in the Probate Courts. In 1828 he was master of the "Masonic Golden Rule Lodge in Weare, N. H."

And last but not least, he was a Christian, manifesting in his daily life the power of his faith, being an active member of the Free Will Baptist Church, and officiating as clerk, during the last twelve years of his life. He was also for 15 years clerk of the Weare Quarterly meeting.
