DEATH COMES TO ESTEEMED AKRON WOMAN FRIDAY
Mrs. E. B. Rice Had Resided Here For Past Thirty-seven Years
Death came to one of Akron's well known and esteemed women, Mrs. E. B. Rice,
last Friday afternoon, August 5, 1949, at the Akron Hospital, where she had been
taken the previous Monday, following a stroke. She attained the age of 76 years
and 6 months.
Hattie Philbrick was born March 6, 1873, at Marion, Linn county, Iowa. On
November 11, 1889, she was united in marriage with E. B. Rice at Herndon, Iowa.
Their early married life was spent at Laurel, Nebr., where Mr. Rice was engaged
in the business of carpentering. They came to Akron in 1912 and this was their
home for the remainder of their lives. Mr. Rice preceded her in death on
February 22, 1948.
She is survived by her two children, Mr. L. D. Ross, of Akron, and Floyd Rice,
of Sioux City; one sister, Mrs. Ollie Wedding, of Laurel, Nebr.; four brothers,
Charles and Vere Philbrick, of Lancaster, Calif.; Nathaniel Philbrick, of Rapid
City, S. D., and Fred Philbrick, of Indianola, Nebr.; also, by three
granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
Mrs. Rice was a faithful member of the Methodist church and was active in the
various organizations of the church. A devoted wife and mother, a helpful and
loyal friend and neighbor, she will long be remembered for her many kindly
deeds.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Methodist
church, conducted by Rev. Orville N. Nelson. Hymns were sung by a male quartet,
composed of J. A. Jenson, Karl Silkebakken, Gail Hemmingsen, and H. J. Behmer.
Pallbearers were B. A. Adams, O. C. Moore, Max Pallock, Duane Lewis, Fred
Marienna, and John D. Peters. Interment was in Riverside cemetery.
Relatives who came from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Rice and family, of
Sioux City; Mrs. Ollie Wedding, of Laurel, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Hocking, of
Auburn, Iowa. Friends were also present from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
