"Another Civil War Veteran is Mustered Out

"O. Philbrick Answers Final Call Monday at Ageof 86; Was Citizen Here 49 Years

"An aged and respected citizen, one of Valley County's few surviving civil war veterans, answered the final call Monday morning when ORLANDO KNIGHT PHILBRICK, 87, passed away at his farm home northeast of Ord after an illness of about a month due to the infirmities of old age. He had lived in this community forty-nine years, reared a family of ten children here and was the type of man not readily replaced. He will be mourned by numberless personal friends.

"Born on April 2, 1845 in Delaware County, Ohio, the son of HARRISON AND JANE PHILBRICK, ORLANDO K. PHILBRICK passed away at his farm home near Ord at 7:40 a.m. December 5, 1932.

"The marriage of ORLANDO K. PHILBRICK AND Miss MARY M. STANTON occurred October 3, 1867 in Delaware, Ohio, and sixteen years later he came to Valley County with his young bride. To them were born ten children and nine of them are left to mourn their father's demise, one son, Scott, preceding his father in death. The faithful wife and mother also preceded him, dying here on June 15, 1918. Besides his nine children, there are 28 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, a half-sister, MRS. GRACE MARTIN of Columbus, Ohio, and many other relatives who mourn his going.

"In 1917, six months before their mother's death, all ten of the Philbrick children had the pleasure and the privilege of helping their parents celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Present were CLAUDE O., HARRY J., RAY and BEN H. PHILBRICK, all of whom live in or near Ord, DAVE PHILBRICK of North Loup, DUDLEY PHILBRICK of Ericson, MRS. LULU DEVER, of Grand Island and MRS. MAUDE ROWELL and MISS FLOSSIE PHILBRICK, who now live in Santa Ana, California, and SCOTT PHILBRICK, now deceased.

"As a youth of seventeen, ORLANDO PHILBRICK enlisted at Columbus, Ohio in Company H, 121st Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served the Union faithfully and honorably as a soldier until his discharge January 1, 1863. He was a member of the G.A.R. and the ladies of that organization will take part in funeral services to be held at the Ord Christian Church this afternoon with Rev. Willard McCarthy in charge. Music is being provided by a mixed quartet composed of Mrs. A.S. Koupal, Mrs. Jos. P. Barta, J.R.Stolz, and F.L. Blessing and Dr. Kirby McGrew will blow taps at the grave. Pallbearers are Lloyd Davis, Jack VanSlyke, August Peterson, William Witt, Wesley Miska and Howard Mason. Interment will be in the Ord City Cemetary.

"Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Philbrick was a farmer, always hard working but always with time enough to help anyone who needed help. It might truthfully be said of him he never betrayed a promise or failed a friend."
