Summary of Civil War Service for George W. McGuire

George Washington McGuire enrolled as a Private in Company G the 11th Reserve Infantry on April 24, 1861 for a period of three years. On July 29, 1861 he mustered in at Apollo. On all additional Muster reports, however, the date June 8, 1861 is given for date of enrollment. The discharge papers list his enrollment as July 1, 1863

Notes:

George was wounded and captured at Gaines Mill in June of 1862. He was confined in a confederate hospital at Richmond, VA. He was paroled at City Point, VA July 19, 1982 and then admitted to Chesapeake Genl Hosp at Ft. Monroe VA July 21, 1862.

George was sent to Genl Hospital Annapolis MD. On August 23, 1862 he reported to Camp Parole, Md..

In February 3 or 5, 1863 George was granted a 60 day furlough on a surgeon's certificate of disability. He was paid a subsistence salary on Fe. 23, 1863. His leave was to travel to Freeport, Armstrong Co., PA. The $8.04 stipend was for transport from MD. to Freeport.

Although all his muster sheets report that he was a corporal. The casualty record reporting George's wound at Fredricksburg list him as a sergeant.


Certificate of Discharge

Corporal George W. McGuire of Captain Spear's Company G of the Eleventh Regiment PA, R.V.I. was enlisted by Captain Spears the 11th regiment of PA, R.V.I. at Apollo PA on the first day of July 1861 to serve three years. he was born in Westmoreland Co in the State of Penna is 43 years of age 5 feet 10 inches high, dark complexion, grey eyes, grey hair and by occupation when enlisted a miner. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty ___days

Date:April 18th 1863

I certify, that I have carefully examined the said George McGuire of Captain spears Company and find his incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of inability to march occurring to injury done to the motor nerves from gun shot - wound of hip received at Fredericksburg Dec. 13th 1862. Total disability for military service - for ordinary occupation 3/4ths.
