CO. B, 11TH REGT, PVRC. We have been very kindly furnished with a
letter from CAPT. HANNIBAL K. SLOAN, to his mother from this place,
from which we make the following extracts in relation to the loss
sustained by Co. B., in the late terrible battles in Virginia.
The letter says:
"The army crossed the Rapidan on the 4th--commenced fighting
the next day on the Leacy plantation, and in what is now known
as the Wilderness. Our regiment was surrounded and had to cut
its way out. In this fight our company lost as follows: Killed-none.
--Wounded- B.F. Laughlin, S.B. Hall, William J. Harbison,and Samuel
Ray. Missing--J.G. McCrady, W.P. McDonald, Joseph H. Maguire
and George Spalding. The missing, I suppose, were taken prisoners.
On the 6th we lost none. Same on the 7th, 8th and 9th. On the
10th William Henry was killed, and David Hoover slightly wounded.
On the 11th lost none. On the 12th Lt. A.W. Stewart was wounded
in the right-fore-arm. **You can judge the loss of our army from
the regiment's loss, which has been about one hundred and forty
men, killed, wounded, and missing." (Indiana Register (May-June 1864), Indiana
Co., PA)
SERIOUS ACCIDENT. On last Friday, MR. JOHN McGUIRE, of Cherryhill township, while engaged in threshing with a machine met with a serious accident. Something about the machine having gone wrong, MR. McGUIRE stepped to the side to examine into the difficulty, when the skirt of his coat became entangled with the shaft, and was so firmly held as to defeat his efforts to get away. He was drawn upon the shaft, which he grasped and clung to, until the machine could be stopped. He was unable to keep entirely free from contact with the floor and adjacent objects, and at each revolution of the shaft he received some new bruises. It is thought that he was carried round upon the shaft forty or fifty times. We are glad to hear that the injuries are not considered dangerous. (Indiana Register, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Extracts November, 1866)
CO. B 11TH RESERVE. The casualties to this Company, in the recent battle were: Killed-- MOSES CHARLES, JAMES GLENN, JAMES BROWN, HARREY FAIR. Wounded-- HENRY HAZLET (since died of wounds), JOHN WAGNER, WILLIAM HAZLET, HARRISON CONNER, CONSTANTINE MORTON, WILLIAM SHEFFER, JOHN LEWIS. Missing-- JOSEPH McGUIRE, H. FETTERMAN, J.J. OATMAN. One account place H. FAIR among the missing. The company fought bravely. Their regiment was broke up--nearly all killed or taken prisoner. --before the fight of Monday and Tuesday. CAPT. PORTER and LTS. SLOAN AND STEWART behaved admirably. Their conduct gained them favor with those who witnesses their bravery. We hear of various incidents that occured during the engagement that proves their fitness for good and reliable soldiers.(Indiana Register (Jun-Aug 1862), Indiana Co., PA).
CO B 11TH RESERVES. From a letter dated Camp near Centreville,
September 1st from G. ADAMS McCLAIN, of this borough, we take
the following. "...On last Saturday...between the contacts

dressed and he was sent to Washington. No bones are injured. On
yesterday we were ordered to fight against the fiercest fire imaginable.
We had fired only a few shots when HENDERSON C. HOWARD fell. He
was wounded in the thigh, and some state also in the head. ...
HOWARD was taken partly off the field bt whether he got off or
not I cannot say. Will get you particulars in a few days. Before
we fell back a ball struck my canteen, passed through it, and
struck my finger, which is quite painful. I am thankful it is
no worse...."
