Information on Unconnected McGuires from Westmoreland Co. More Information Gratefully Accepted

Mary Philomena Maguire.

Provided by Dominic E. Noel. He maintains an excellent website with Westmoreland County Migrations and PA Catholic Genealogy

If your line was of the Catholic faith in the early 1800's then their
records will be at St Vincent's near Latrobe, PA called Sportmans Hall
at that time. There was a James in the 1800 census of Mt Pleasant Twp,
Westmoreland Co and he was a contributer to the building fund at St V's.
in 1810 a little before your time line.

My Grand Uncle's son married a Mary Philomena Maguire. These were
in the group that went to Davenport, Iowa in 1835 from Westmoreland Co.

James McGuire and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel

Provide by Gina Kirkland. She is best known for her excellent work on the Derry Area Historical Society and the Westmoreland County History & Genealogy WebRing

We have a historically famous (well at least he's famous around here)
person named James McGuire...which is more than likely the same man
mentioned in the 1850 census that you mentioned.

I wonder if maybe you could be Catholic...only because of this.....

In 1822, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church was built of logs in the woods,
about 2 miles from where I live today. It was built for Catholic
farmers in the area who had to make an all day trip to nearby St.
Vincent Archabbey in Latrobe, PA. The land for the church was donated
by James McGuire from his farm. I believe he had a daughter named Anne.
The church had no name and one evening Anne dreamed of a lady telling
her to name the church as such.

Ann McGuire is to have married John Donohoe in this church and they had
nine children. She was to have been buried there as well.

Mt Carmel Cemetery is no more but I have a list of burials...I just have
no clue when this list was compiled....the names connected to McGuires
are: (I wrote these as they are spelled on this sheet)

Mrs. Anna D. (McGuire) Donahue
Mr. J. Donahue
Mr. James McGuire
Mrs. James McGuire
John McGuire

There are also several Garrigan's listed as well as Hayden's, Flowers',
Brannigan's, Bridge's, and Kennedy's.
