ALLEN & JOHNSON FAMILY CEMETERY

When I decided to trace my family history, I realized I knew nothing about my ancestors, and I had no idea where to begin until I had a faint memory of my grandfather's funeral. I was only 9 but I remember following the hearse along wagon tracks through a field and my grandfather was buried there.

I began looking for what I knew had to be an old family cemetery somewhere in East Bend, N. C.  I was expecting to find a grown-up field with just a few scattered graves, but I was pleasantly surprised to find  a beautiful, well-maintained cemetery on the top of a hill.  I felt as if I had struck gold. Upon discovery of my family cemetery, I found  fifty-five of my ancestors as far back as 1780.  Many of the old tombstones were difficult to read but the camera brought out the words and made them more readable.

John Henry Allen  1780 - 1862 (My 3rd gr,grandfather)

When the tombstones of John Henry and Nancy were made, the dates were reversed.    Records show Nancy died first, and John Henry had her buried near their house in what would later become the Allen-Johnson Family Cemetery.  He went to her grave everyday, standing over it, grieving.  His sons became concerned and finally moved his house further down the road next to his son, Elisha.
   

Elisha Allen 1828 - 1877 Son of  John Henry & Nancy Allen (My 2nd gr,grandfather) The date of birth on the tombstone is incorrect.  It should be 1816. Elizabeth Spainhour Abt 1842 - Aft 1880 Wife of Elisha Allen Elisha's wife, Elizabeth Spainhour Allen, was not buried in the Family Cemetery because the Yadkin River had  flooded, and they could not get across the river.  She was buried in an Allen Cemetery in Stokes or Surry Co, NC.
