14. CHARLES LAFAYETTE4 OVERSTREET (WILLIAM BRUCE3, CHARLES FAYETTE2, JAMES1) was born February 28, 1832 in Albemarle County Virginia (Source: 1860 Federal Census for Howard County, Missouri. The 1870 Federal Census for Howard County, Missouri shows L. Overstreet as the wife of Rachael Overstreet. (Lafayette)), and died February 25, 1884 in Howard County Missouri. He married ELIZABETH RACHEL SWOPE February 07, 1861 in Howard County, Missouri (Source: Howard City Marriages by Woodruff), daughter of CHARLES SWOPE and MELISSA WILDS. She was born September 1844 in Howard County Missouri (Source: 1900 Federal Census for Howard County, Missouri.), and died Unknown. Notes for CHARLES LAFAYETTE OVERSTREET: From "History of Howard and Cooper Counties, Missouri 1883" Farmer, Soldiering and merchandising have each claimed a share of

Charles F. Overstreet's time and energy since his youth. He is now engaged in farming, to which most of his life has been devoted, and has a farm of 200 acres. He was born in Albemarle county, Virginia, February 28, 1832. His father, William B., was a native of Virginia, as was also his grandfather, Charles Overstreet. Charles, his grandfather, was a soldier in the war for independence, and served in the revolutionary army until the close of that struggle. Mr. Overstreet's mother, before her marriage, was a Miss Sophia Harris, also of Virginia, and his parents were married in that state. When the son, the subject of this sketch, was but four years old the family came to Missouri and settled in St. Charles county, where they remained until 1845. They then came on to Howard county and here young Overstreet was reared and educated in the common schools of the neighborhood. In 1845 Mr. Overstreet, the son, then being a young man twenty-two years of age, went to the town of New Franklin and engaged in the boot and shoe business, in which he continued until 1858. During the last named year he resumed farming, and this business he has since followed except the time he spent in the army. In 1861 he enlisted in the Missouri state guards under the call of Governor Jackson, and served about three months. Again, In 1864, he enlisted under General Jo Shelby, and served under him until the surrender in 1865. Mr. Overstreet was married in the 14th of February, 1860, to Miss Rachel Swope, a Missouri lady by birth, and they have seven children, John H., Sophia E., Josephine, Charles F., Lou Ellen, Stonewall Jackson, Hugh Doniphan.

Notes for JOHN HOLMAN OVERSTREET: From the "New Franklin News"

John H. Overstreet, a well known citizen of South Howard County, died at his home about four and one half miles northeast of Hilldale early Saturday morning, following a long illness of a complication of diseases. Funeral Services were conducted from the Christian Church in this city Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Eld. A. N. Lindsey of Clinton conducting the services. Burial in Mount Pleasant cemetery.

John Holman Overstreet was born near this city January 6, 1862 and attained the age of 61 years, 4 months and 20 days. He was married to Miss Ollie King on November 30, 1879, to which union eleven children were born, eight boys and three girls, nine of whom survive. They are Arthur, Walter, Hugh, Lance, George, Mrs. I. N. Forbis, Mrs. H. M. Dodson, all of Howard county and Mrs. W. E. Mize and Frank G. of Sedalia. His first wife died October 20, 1915 and on September 26, 1917, he was married to Rosa C. Johnson, who survives. To this union one child was born, Sophia Virginia who died at the age of ten months. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren and one great grandchild, one brother, two sisters and a host of near relatives and friends. The News joins the many friends of the family in extending sincere sympathy.

John was reported to be a very mean man who abused his wife and children. When Rose, his daughter had an illegimate child, he made them both stay in the barn until the child died.

He loved music and dancing. He played the fiddle at all the dances in the neighborhood. He also loved to drink and was an alcoholic. When the dance was over, the people there put him in his buggy and the horse would take him home. His wife and children then put him to bed.

He left his fiddle to his grandson Edward Holman. Sonny, as Edward was called, started taking fiddle lessons when he was a young man. The story is told that his teacher walked him home the first day and told the family that a child should not use this fiddle. The name of the Maker was inside the fiddle; it was Stradivarius. Sonny's widow Jewell still has the violin, but I don't think anyone ever tried to evaluate its worth.

OVERSTREET'S BODY FOUND -- Drowned nearly five months ago while working on a bridge.

The body of Hugh Overstreet, who was drowned on December 22, 1926, while working on bridge construction over a swollen stream near Catlettsburg, KY, was recovered last Saturday from a sandbar in the river near the point where the bridge collapsed and where four other men besides Mr. Overstreet lost their lives.

The body was shipped to Glasgow, the home of his widow, for burial. Funeral services being held from the Christian Church there Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Bro. J. E. Crapp of this city.

For weeks following the collapse of the bridge, every effort was put forward to recover the bodies of the five men who lost their lives, but all to no avail. The bridge was only partially constructed when the swollen waters of the stream caused the piers to wash out. The men were at work, trying to save the structure when they lost their lives.

No details as to the recovery of Mr. Overstreet's body was received at Glasgow. Mrs. Overstreet returned a couple of weeks ago from Catlettsburg, where she had gone by prearrangement to join with relatives of the four men who lost their lives in an effort to recover the bodies. It was the purpose of the searching party to join in the expense of pumping sand from the bar in the hope of finding the bodies. When Mrs. Overstreet arrived at Catlettsburg, she found none of the other people who were supposed to have joined her there and after remaining for a couple of weeks, she returned to her home at Glasgow, giving up hopes of the rescue. Then on Saturday, a message was received telling of the finding of Mr. Overstreet's body and its shipment to Glasgow. No details, however, were given as to how the recovery was brought about. The body was badly decomposed, but identification was established by means of clothing he wore, a belt buckle and principally by the loss of the little finger on the left hand, which Mr. Overstreet lost through an injury while still a resident of this city. Mr. Overstreet has been an employee of the bridge company since the building of the highway bridge across the river at Boonville. It was then he joined the company; going from that job to the Glasgow bridge and its completion, he remained with the company until his death.

Hugh Warren Overstreet was born near this city, June 8, 1889. He united with the New Franklin church during the ministry of Rev. Lindsey in 1900, and in May 1907 was married to Miss Lucy Jane Drake. To this union five children were born. Namely Elizabeth, Enoch, Margaret, Earl, and Hugh, Jr., all of whom with the wife survive. Five brothers and three sisters also survive.

MO (Source: 1900 Federal Census for Howard County, Missouri Howard County Cemetery Records by Karen Boggs). Notes for FRANK GREEN OVERSTREET: Buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, New Franklin, Missouri.

Frank was my grandfather. I lived with him and my grandmother, Myrtle, from about the time I was three until his death. His middle name was Green, but it had no special meaning. A man who's last name was Green, promised Frank's mother he would give Frank a suit when he became 18, if she would name him green.

Daddy, I called him daddy and my Grandmother Momma, was very much in love with Myrtle Overstreet, but her family did not want her to marry an Overstreet. Frank's father had a reputation as a drunkard, also, he was very mean. His mother, however, was a strong Christian woman. I was told that every Sunday morning she had Her eleven children at church. I know she did a fine job raising them by the way they turned out. Because of Myrtles' family objection to the marriage, Frank and Myrtle agreed to wait until Myrtle finished high school. Momma did finish high School; quite a feat in an age where most had a 3rd or 4th grade education. They were married when Momma reached 18.

Daddy worked at anything he could to make a living. Until 1920, he was a common laborer on the railroad. That job ended with the railroad strike. Daddy then went to work on the river barges. In 1923 the Boonville Bridge was built. Daddy went to work for the Mount Vernon Bridge company. The Boonville Bridge was the first bridge he worked on.

Bridgemen led a nomadic life. Daddy and family moved from place to place frequently. Momma generally ran a boarding house wherever they were. Many of the bridgemen were single, and frequently if they were not single, their wives and children stayed home and led a more settled life. Momma wasn't about to leave Daddy, and Daddy would not have traveled without her and his kids, so this worked out for all concerned. Daddy quickly rose to the rank of Superintendent of Riggers and built bridges all over the southern and eastern parts of the US

Daddy loved kids and dancing. He used to take the whole family dancing, and would take turns dancing with all of his girls. I remember one night, Daddy had taken Momma, Joan, and I out. We had supper on a boat while it paddled upstream and then danced until we got back to port. Daddy would dance with Momma, then Joan, and then I would put my feet on his and we would waltz around the floor. We were dancing on the top deck and you could see all the stars and the moon. When we left the boat and went home, Daddy put his suit jacket on me. It was so long it drug the sidewalk, but he held my hand and we walked home. I think I was walking to prove to Momma I wasn't tired.

Daddy had a bad temper, but he never lost it with Momma or his children. In fact, he spoiled all of us rotten. I can remember when Momma had promised Joan and I could go to the movies If I learned my spelling words. I hated spelling and could not spell. Daddy stood behind Momma and mouthed the letters so I could spell the words.

In 1939, Daddy was hit on the head with a beam by a new man on the job. Bridgeing was dangerous work. The saying was three dead men to a bridge. He developed a brain infection and was in a coma for some time before he died. Shortly before he died, he became conscious and spoke to each of his family in turn; he told them what he expected of them and that he was dying. When the doctor tried to tell him that he was much better or he wouldn't be conscious, He said, no he had seen his mother in heaven and she was waiting there for him. He lapsed back into unconsciousness and died shortly thereafter.

Ethel was a Licensed Practical Nurse at St. Joseph Hospital, Boonville, MO and later worked in the Keller Memorial Hospital, Fayette, MO. She was recognized as the oldest working Missourian when she retired in 1980 at the age of 79. She didn't really retire. She would go to the hospital, and sit and rock the babies even then. Aunt Ethel was half Indian. Her mother was an Indian, I have been told by many of her relatives, but I have never checked this out. Her mother was her father-in-law's second wife.
