Daniel Marion "D. M." Foster

Nancy Ann Dixon Foster

Daniel Marion Foster was born 16 Nov.1851 in Charleston, Bradley Co., TN the fifth child of  William Spencer Foster Sr. (1822-1881) and Mary P. (Handley) Foster (1824-1884) of Polk Co., TN. Daniel Marion Foster married Nancy Ann Dixon 17 July 1873 in McMinn Co., TN. Nancy Ann Dixon was born May 1857 the eight child of William B. Dixon (1827-1906) and Nancy A. (Cannon) Dixon (1824-1885) of McMinn Co., TN. Daniel and Nancy died of smallpox within 11 days of each other in Spokane, Spokane Co., WA, from exposure by an infected renter in their Spokane rooming house.

Daniel and Nancy's first child William A. Billy was born December 1875 in TN probably in McMinn Co. Sometime after the birth of their daughter Ellen in September 1877 the family left Tennessee in a mule-drawn wagon, bound for Texas. In 1880 the census taker found them in McLennan Co., Texas with a new son Samuel born October 1879. Their daughter Ida was born March 1882 in Johnson Co., Texas. The family left Texas sometime after the birth of Robert in February 1885, and arrived in Washington Territory before the August 1877 census for Lewis Co.. Daniel--"D. M. Foster" as he was called in the two Chehalis weekly newspapers--built corduroy roads under contract for Lewis Co.. Three children were born in Chehalis, Lewis Co: Lillian in August 1887, Grover in August 1890, and Vene in March 1893. The Panic of 1893 led to the failure of  D. M. Foster's road-building business. In August of 1894 the family moved to Spokane Co., Washington. They were counted in the 1900 census for the city of Spokane, where Daniel and Nancy operated a rooming house upstairs and a saloon downstairs.
