ables mean there are an almost unending variety of spellings in the historical record.

English parish registers tend to be available beginning anytime from the mid- 1500's to the mid-1600's depending on the place. Although a thorough search has not yet been undertaken, I have seen references to the family in parish records of London as early as 1544; of Cambridgeshire as early as 1559; of Essex County as early as 1626; of Hertfordshire as early as 1661 and of Suffolk as early as 1815.1

Fortunately, Dr. Gerald435312 L. Casebolt, visited England in 1982 and examined parish records for various years from 1559 to 1851 as available for the parishes of Abington Greater, Abington Little, All Saints(Cambridge), Babraham, Balsham, Bartlow, Barrington, Bassingbourn, Bottisham, Burwell, Fowlmere, Fulbourn, Haslingfield, Holy Trinity(Cambridge), Melbourn, Orwell, St. Edwards(Camb.), St. Marys(Linton), St. Vigar(Fulbourn), Little Shelford, Thriplow, and Wendy all in central and southern Cambridgeshire.  His data, together with a small amount from a few other sources, are detailed in Appendix A (also see Map 1.2, page 1-6).

 

Work in these records is made extremely difficult due to the wide variety of spellings of the family name and due to similar family names which were just as often misspelled.  For instance, the Casborne family lived in many of the Casbolt areas providing constant confusion; similarly, the Cakebread family.  Neverthe- less, much is now clear regarding Casbolt history.

 

By the early 1500's, the tenth generation of Casbolts (taking Stephen as the first known generation) was well established in the parishes of Fowlmere, Thriplow, Melbourn, and St. Marys (Linton).  All parish locations are shown in Map 1.2, page 1-6.

Fowlmere and Thriplow were just three miles north and west of Ickleton. Melbourn was just three miles west of Fowlmere. And Linton was just about
