Did John die in the Civil War? Cecil County Maryland Directory of 1878171 lists a “John Borland” as blacksmith in Fair Hill, MD:Cecil. If this is the same John, then he did not die in the Civil War. [[PDA 28-Apr-2000]]
Research
Based on Mary E Biddle’s marriage to D T Devlin on 18-Jan-1872, Mary was a “widow” (from the marriage record). Therefore, either:
(1) John had died before 18-Jan-1872
(2) John left Mary E Biddle for some reason and she proceeded as if he were dead
(3) Mary E Biddle who married D T Devlin was not, in fact, ever married to John Borland (her obituary indicates that her first husband was “Theodore Borland”

Other mysteries:
[a] who was the “John Borland” who married Amanda Alexander after her 1st husband Matthew Borland died?

Possibilities:
John BORLAND listed in Alexandria National Cemetary, d. 12/20/1862, Plot: A 0 650, bur. 12/20/1862

NOTE: I have found a John BURLIN in Cecil Co records and he is NOT this John Borland -- he was born about 1797 based on the 1850 Census (wife is probably named Elizabeth). [[PDA, Aug-2006]]

CAVEAT FILED
Dispute Over the Will of Jacob T Biddle, Late of the Fourth District

Mrs Mary Devlin, through her attorney, George A Blake, has filed in the Orphans’ Court for Cecil county, a caveat to the will of Jacob T Biddle, which was admitted to probate in said court on the 19th of the previous month. Mrs Devlin is a sister of the deceased testator, and she alleges that the said will was not the last will and testament of the deceased and that he died intestate; that the paper alleged to be his will was not made when he was of sound mind and capable of making a contract; that at the time he executed the paper he did not know or understand its contents; that Mr Biddle did not sign the will or anyone for him in his presence and by his direction and that it was not attested in his presence by credible witnesses.
The deceased testator, Jacob T Biddle, was an old bachelor, and lived on a fine farm in the Fourth district. At the death of his brother, George Biddle in 1874, he was appointed guardian of his brother’s two minor children, George J Biddle and Bertie Biddle, and it is said, took great interest in looking after their welfare. On the 9th of June, 1896, had his attorney, William S Evans, Esq, the present State’s Attorney for Cecil county, draw him a will, in which will he devised to his deceased brother’s two children and his wards named above, all his property, save a hundred dollars to a former housekeeper. The witnesses to the will are States Attorney William S Evans and his son, James F Evans.

Mrs Mollie D Arbuckle petitioned the Court to admit her as a party to the caveat filed by Mrs Mary Devlin to the will of Jacob T Biddle, deceased. Since filing the caveat Mrs Devlin has died. Mrs Arbuckle is a daughter of Mrs Devlin and a niece of Jacob T Biddle. In his will Mr Biddle devised his property to his nephew George J Biddle and niece Bertha Biddle. The Court passed an order admitting Mrs Arbuckle as a party to the caveat.
