CAVEAT FILED
Dispute Over the Will of Jacob T Biddle, Late of the Fourth District

Mrs Mary Devlin, through her attorney, George A Blake, has filed in the Orphans’ Court for Cecil county, a caveat to the will of Jacob T Biddle, which was admitted to probate in said court on the 19th of the previous month. Mrs Devlin is a sister of the deceased testator, and she alleges that the said will was not the last will and testament of the deceased and that he died intestate; that the paper alleged to be his will was not made when he was of sound mind and capable of making a contract; that at the time he executed the paper he did not know or understand its contents; that Mr Biddle did not sign the will or anyone for him in his presence and by his direction and that it was not attested in his presence by credible witnesses.
The deceased testator, Jacob T Biddle, was an old bachelor, and lived on a fine farm in the Fourth district. At the death of his brother, George Biddle in 1874, he was appointed guardian of his brother’s two minor children, George J Biddle and Bertie Biddle, and it is said, took great interest in looking after their welfare. On the 9th of June, 1896, had his attorney, William S Evans, Esq, the present State’s Attorney for Cecil county, draw him a will, in which will he devised to his deceased brother’s two children and his wards named above, all his property, save a hundred dollars to a former housekeeper. The witnesses to the will are States Attorney William S Evans and his son, James F Evans.

Mrs Mollie D Arbuckle petitioned the Court to admit her as a party to the caveat filed by Mrs Mary Devlin to the will of Jacob T Biddle, deceased. Since filing the caveat Mrs Devlin has died. Mrs Arbuckle is a daughter of Mrs Devlin and a niece of Jacob T Biddle. In his will Mr Biddle devised his property to his nephew George J Biddle and niece Bertha Biddle. The Court passed an order admitting Mrs Arbuckle as a party to the caveat.

BIDDLE by Ruby Haskins Ellis (copyright 1931)
[newspaper clipping found in Bible of Mollie D Arbuckle]
This name, according to the best authorities on nomenclature, is a modification of the name Biddolph, or Biddulph, an Anglo-Saxon compound meaning “boat” and “help.” Biddulph was the guardian saint of the mariner and much adored by all seafaring men.
Some one else, however, has come along declaring that the name of Biddle is derived from Beadle, which was the name of the office of messenger or crier at court. The first explanation appears to be better founded.
The ancestral home of the Biddle family was in Staffordshire, England.
The coat of arms reproduced above was borne by the distinguished Colonist, William Biddle (1630-1712). He was a member of the Council and General Assembly of the Province of West Jersey, in 1682, and was president of this body in 1706-7. William Biddle was the son of Michael Biddle, of Elmhurst, Staffordshire, England. There have been and are today many eminent descendants of this family. Clement Biddle (1740-1814) was Deputy Quartermaster General of military forces in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. He was appointed by General Washington to receive the swords of the Hessian officers at the Battle of Trenton. The name Biddle is particularly prominent in Philadelphia today.
Representatives of this name, who settled in the New England states were John, of Hartford, CN, in 1639 and Joseph, of Marshfield, MA, in 1636.

OBITUARY
David Devlin, a well known and successful farmer of the Third district, residing two miles east of Cherry Hill, was found dead at at late hour Monday afternoon lying beside a horse which he had been engaged in harnessing to a wagon. Mr Devlin was apparently in the best of health at noon, when he ate a hearty meal. After working about the farm during the afternoon, he had just brought the horse to the stable, when he fell to the ground dead. Dr J S Whittaker, of Cherry Hill, pronounced his death due to heart trouble. He was about seventy years of age. Mr Devlin was a man of excellent character, and was highly esteemed. He was married three times, and leaves a widow who is now in a critical condition from an operation. One son survives -- David Devlin, who lived at home.
The funeral will be held Thursday, meeting at the house at 12:30 o’clock. Interment at Cherry Hill Cemetary.281
