Her petition states that Daniel Matheny reared 12 children of whom 5 were still living.
169Daniel and Mary (Fewel) Matheny were industrious and frugal. After marriage, they purchased a large acreage on what was known as Keener’s Ridge, Herold, WV, in Braxton and Nicholas Counties and contributed greatly in the development of schools, churches, and a better way of life for the pioneer families of their community. Their home was large and comfortable and was still standing in 1964. Also, the fruit and vegetable cellar is still in use by the present owner of the farm. At one time, this farm was noted for the fine chestnut grove and apple orchard. Two family cemetaries are located on the farm with monuments marking each member of the family buried there. Daniel Matheny is buried in the family cemetary, but his wife Mary is buried in the Walker Cemetary near Baughman Church, which is the last resting place of many members of the Matheny Family even to this day.
