OBITUARY
Renan, Edward Coleman Scruggs (07/03/1955)
Mr. Scruggs of Salisbury, N. C. died at his home Sunday at 6 o’clock from a very sudden heat [typo-heart] attack. He was sick only about an hour and died before he could get a doctor. Mr. and Mrs. Scruggs and daughter, Naomi, had just returned from visiting their children the day before. They visited in Chicago, Illinois, Washington, D.C., and Mr. Scruggs seemed as well as usual. He was on vacation, being an employee of the Southern Railroad, and would have retired in January. He had been with the Southern for 43 years.
He was born January 20th, 1891, son of late Benjamin and Mary Jacobs Scruggs. He had lived most of his life in January in the Hurt community until a few years ago when he moved to Salisbury, N. C. to be more convenient to his work. He was married December 1913 to Bertha Fielder.
They were the parents fo [typo-of and missing number] Children all living except one little girl, Irene, who died when she was 6 years of age. They had three sets of twins, Clarence and Clara, Ruby and Ruth, Mack and Marvin, five others, Mrs. Stencil Walker , Edward Scruggs, Preston Scruggs, Fairfax Scruggs and Naomi, all married and only one at home. (Typo regarding all married, Naomi was not married at this time.) He is also survived by three brothers, Joe, James, and Orah (typo Orie)and one sister, Mrs. Emma Miller, and 16 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at New Prospect, his home church, Tuesday afternoon by Rev Metzs of Salisbury, N. C., where they attended church and assisted by Rev. Jessup of Altavista.
The ladies of the Baptist Church prepared a covered dish lunch for the Scruggs family Monday before they left Salisbury with the body of their father.
He was brought to the home of his daughter until an hour before services at Prospect Church. Burial is in the family plot in the church cemetery. His railroad friends from Spencer, N. C., and other places were pallbearers and friends from North Carolina, Hurt and Piney Grove were flower bearers. The floral designs were many and beautiful, one of the most impressive design was the large cross with a white dove from friends of N. C.408

Mrs. Bertha Fielder Scruggs, 71, of Hurt, died Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Virginia Baptist Hospital at Lynchburg.
A native of Bedford County, she was the widow of Edward C. Scruggs. She was born May 10, 1894, and was the daughter of James R. and Martha Preston Fielder. Mrs. Scruggs was a member of New Prospect Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
She is survived by six sons, R. Edward Scruggs and J. Clarence Scruggs, both of Spencer, N. C., Preston Scruggs of Kenosha, Wis., Fairfax Scruggs of Park Ridge, Ill., Marvin Scruggs of Chicago, Ill., and Malcolm Scruggs of Hurt; five daughters, Mrs. Stencil Walker and Mrs. Johnny Harper, both of Hurt, Mrs. Carter Layne of Gretna, Mrs. Ruth Giglio of Arlington, Mrs. Lonnie Rice of Salisbury, N. C.; one brother C. D Fielder of Moneta; and two sisters, Mrs. W. M. Freeland of Spencer and Mrs. J. L. Mowery of Salisbury.
Funeral services were conductor at 4 p.m. Tuesday in New Prospect Baptist Church by Revs. Dargan Lucas and Morris Cather. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joseph Giglio, Odie Haynes, Jimmie Scruggs, John Link, Huston Winchester, Jerry Watlington, Randolph Miller and Kermit Bennett.408

SCRUGGS-FIELDER
Mr. Edward Scruggs, of Altavista and Miss Bertha Fielder, of Bedford County, were united in marriage yesterday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock in the parsonage of the College Hill Baptist Church by the Rev W A Ayres.
Mr. Scruggs is an employee of the Southern Railway. The bride is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Jas R Fielder, of Bedford County.
They left on Southern train No 38 for a bridal tour. They will make their future home in Spencer, NC408
