Murphy's Deed from Shields
This Indenture made this 14th of September in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and ninety three Between William Shields of the County of Pittsylvania of the one part and John Murphy of the County of Bedford of the other part. WitnesSeth that the said William Shields for and in consideration of the sum of Three Hundred pounds current money of Virginia to me in hand paid by the said John Murphey afor before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt is
hereby acknowledged therefore I the sd. William Shields hath granted bargained and Sold, Aliened, released and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain and Sell, Alien, release and confirm unto him the sd John Murphy a certain tract or parcel of Land situate lying, and being in the County aforesaid on the North side of Sandy river containing by estimation two hundred and seventy three acres, or the same more or leSs, and bounded as followeth, to wit, Begining at a lin
[fir?] tree on the North side of Sandy River. thence by new dividing lines North fifty seven degrees East 32 poles to a gum N 63 E18 poles to a red Oak No. 85 E 48 poles to a red oak S 57 E 42 poles to a white oak in John Macks line thence a conditional line up the branch as it manders to a white oak corner on sd Macks line N85. W121 poles up to pointers No. 38 W 82 poles to William Garners line, thence down the same as it manders to the begining containing by estimation 140 Acres, be the same more or leSs and bounded as followeth, to wit, Begining at pointers No. 44 E
104 poles to a white oak No. 62 E 70 poles to a white oak in John Macks line thence along the same S 89W6 to Macks exiner[?] white oak on the above mentioned branch to the last station in the Conditional line
To have and to hold the above mentioned tract or parcel of Land with its Appurtenances Improvements and every part and parcel thereof with all and singular whatever thereunto belongs unto the proper acquired behoof of him the said John Murphy his heirs and aSsigns forever. And
I the sd William Shields do covenant and agree to with peaceable and quiet poSseSsion unto him the sd Murphy on the land and premises above mentioned to him his heirs and aSsigns forever and will for ever respect and defend the rite of sd land to be free from the rite, [?] or title of all manner of person or persons whatsever.

At a court held for Pittsylvania County the 17 day of September 1793
The within Indenture was by the within named William Shields acknowledged to be his act and deed and June the wife of the sd William Shields she being first privily examined as the Law directs
relinquished her right of dower in and to the land and premises Conveyed by the said Indenture All which were Ordered to be recorded by the Court CC

William SHIELDS appears on the list of Pittsylvania Co tithables in 1767, the year that Pittsylvania Co was formed.

Cindy Taylor got the 1820 Pittsylvania County Census and found this on a William Shields:
2 males under the age of 10 years old
2 males of 10 and under the age of 16 years old (one of these would be Joshua)
1 male of 18 and under the age of 26 years old - James
1 male 45 years and up - William
2 females of 16 and under the age of 26 years old
1 female of 26 and under the age of 45 years old - Nancy
Could not find William in any other Pittsylvania County census.131

Derived from letter of Administration listing Nancy as an heir of Isham FARMER and living in TN244

He was “from Wilson Co TN. he moved to West TN Henderson Co, in 1822”573
