In the 1850 census on the page before James and Sally Shields, there is a Joshua and Maria Shields (Joshua is 42 years old - b. 1808). I went to Danville last summer to the Virginia/North Carolina Piedmont Genealogical Society and obtained some information on him. His parents are listed as William and Nancy Shields. I am assuming that James and Joshua were brothers.131
