He was a British soldier of the Revolutionary War who was captured by the Americans and stayed in the United States. He was drafted as a soldier under Sir Henry Clinton, and he was in Colonel Tarleton's command at the battle of Cowpens, were he was captured 17 January 1781. He choose to stay in America. He and three of his sons fought in the War of 1812.
