Shortly after their marriage, Cornelia and John moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where John owned a mercantile store. They then returned to Virginia, settling in Bedford County. According to a letter Cornelia wrote, they had a son while living in Memphis, but the child was not mentioned again in subsequent letters. It is believed the child died shortly after birth, as Cornelia herself was recovering from a fever and mentioned that the child was weakly.466
