At 12 years of age, he was employed as an express by military commandment of Halifax (Old Town) to convey orders from LaFayette ordering troops to the rendezvous to aid General Green, etc.

Daniel served in the House of Delegates of the Virgina Assembly 1803-1812. He was a Captain of Militia in 1794, later Major and Colonel of 42nd Regiment during the War of 1812. He was commissioned Justice of the Peace in Sep 1799.

Judge Daniel Coleman’s portrait hangs in the Pittsylvania County Courthouse. Daniel, son of Colonel Stephen Coleman, was the young man who rode to inform General Nathaniel Greene about the activities of General Charles Cornwallis during the Revolutionary War.572
