Also, here are some links that I have found helpful/interesting for research in Missouri; some will help in other areas as well:
- Missouri GenWeb Project Home Page - Here you will find links to GenWeb pages for all of the counties in Missouri. This is a good place to start. Remember to bookmark those you will use often.
- Mail Lists - Here you will find John Fuller's comprehensive groups of mailing lists not only for specific areas in Missouri (which includes the MISSOURI-L RootsWeb Mailing List), but you will also find mail lists for just about any group or subject. Just scroll down the page.
- Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet - This link will take you directly to the Missouri listings. This one is not to be missed!
- Missouri State Archives - Please visit this site to find out how to obtain Missouri archival information (such as census information, Civil War information, etc.) via snail mail or email, and to order your copy of the FREE publication, A Guide to County and Municipal Records on Microfilm (this publication is invaluable if you are researching in Missouri).
- National Archives and Records Administration - This is the website for the National Archives in Washington, DC. I have included this website for informational purposes because I have gotten a lot of good information on land records and on Civil War pension files for my Missouri ancestors. Here you will find instructions on how to obtain the appropriate forms to make a request.
- Bureau of Land Management, Government Land Office, Eastern States - First, enter a ZIP Code and then select the state in which you wish to search for land records. This land website covers the states east of the Mississippi, with the exception of the original 13 states. If you need information regarding land in those states, you must contact the community courthouse involved. With this information in hand, you can then proceed to request the complete land record from the National Archives (see their link above).
- Missouri Historical Society - located in Columbia, Missouri.
- Missouri State Genealogical Society - This is a great one if you are researching in several counties in Missouri.
