St. Louis City was organized on August 22, 1876, under the 1875 Constitution of the State of Missouri. Until that date, St. Louis City and St. Louis County were one government entity. After that time, St. Louis City established its own government, making it an independent city, and began maintaining its own courthouse and records. All St. Louis City records are maintained at: City Hall, 1200 Market Street, St. Louis, Missouri, 63103. All original St. Louis County records PRIOR to August 22, 1876 are also maintained at the St. Louis City Hall. | My research in St. Louis City covers both South St. Louis and North St. Louis city areas. I was born and raised in South St. Louis and lived there until July of 1997. I attended Gardenville Elementary School on the corner of Gravois and Kingshighway (now the Gardenville Senior Citizen Center) and graduated from Cleveland High School on South Grand (now a magnet school, Naval Junior ROTC) in 1973 (Go, DUTCHMEN!). My parents both graduated from Roosevelt High School. That made for a particularly interesting high school football season, since Cleveland and Roosevelt had always been great rivals! My grandfather was the Head Custodian at Cleveland High School until his death in 1966. My grandparents and great-grandparents are some of the "scrubby Dutch" that settled in some of the neighborhoods of the south city in the late 1800s. Take a look here at some old photos of the St. Louis City area (including downtown St. Louis in the early 1900s, the riverfront in its pre-Arch day, and some of the landmark tourist attractions like the Forest Park (includes the St. Louis Zoo, the Municipal Opera ("The Muny") outdoor theater), Shaw's Garden, etc. There is also a section for the 1904 World's Fair (under construction) that was here in St. Louis. I am sure that I will always consider myself a "South-Sider" at heart. I have quite a lot of information that I have accumulated in my research in the St. Louis City area, and you can go to the vital statistics page (under construction) for viewing information on births, census, deaths, marriages, etc., not only for information on my ancestors, but all of the excess that came with my information. Also, here are some links to some great areas on the web that could be of help to you in the research on your St. Louis City ancestors.
