Area Map of St. Louis City St. Louis City was organized on August 22, 1876, under the 1875 Constitution of the State of Missouri. Until that date, St. Louis City and St. Louis County were one government entity. After that time, St. Louis City established its own government, making it an independent city, and began maintaining its own courthouse and records.

All St. Louis City records are maintained at: City Hall, 1200 Market Street, St. Louis, Missouri, 63103. All original St. Louis County records PRIOR to August 22, 1876 are also maintained at the St. Louis City Hall.

My research in St. Louis City covers both South St. Louis and North St. Louis city areas. I was born and raised in South St. Louis and lived there until July of 1997. I attended Gardenville Elementary School on the corner of Gravois and Kingshighway (now the Gardenville Senior Citizen Center) and graduated from Cleveland High School on South Grand (now a magnet school, Naval Junior ROTC) in 1973 (Go, DUTCHMEN!). My parents both graduated from Roosevelt High School. That made for a particularly interesting high school football season, since Cleveland and Roosevelt had always been great rivals! My grandfather was the Head Custodian at Cleveland High School until his death in 1966.

My grandparents and great-grandparents are some of the "scrubby Dutch" that settled in some of the neighborhoods of the south city in the late 1800s. Take a look here at some old photos of the St. Louis City area (including downtown St. Louis in the early 1900s, the riverfront in its pre-Arch day, and some of the landmark tourist attractions like the Forest Park (includes the St. Louis Zoo, the Municipal Opera ("The Muny") outdoor theater), Shaw's Garden, etc. There is also a section for the 1904 World's Fair (under construction) that was here in St. Louis. I am sure that I will always consider myself a "South-Sider" at heart.

I have quite a lot of information that I have accumulated in my research in the St. Louis City area, and you can go to the vital statistics page (under construction) for viewing information on births, census, deaths, marriages, etc., not only for information on my ancestors, but all of the excess that came with my information.

Also, here are some links to some great areas on the web that could be of help to you in the research on your St. Louis City ancestors.
  • St. Louis City - The St. Louis City Community Information Network (CIN) website is a great place to start learning about the City of St. Louis and its history. Be sure to visit the Neighborhoods section of this website.
  • Genealogy in St. Louis is Dave Lossos' great website with a lot of helpful links and information about research and genealogy in the St. Louis area. This site is good for both St. Louis City and County, as well as the rest of the Metropolitan St. Louis area (including the Illinois counties right across the river).
  • St. Louis Public Library - Welcome Page - This page will take you to all the different areas on the library's web site available for St. Louis, including their catalog. This is a great place to start!
  • St. Louis Public Library - This page will take you to an index of articles of interest about the St. Louis area. Copies of these articles may be ordered using the same procedure as for obituaries shown below.
  • St. Louis Public Library: Premier Library Sources - At this website you will find an index for obituaries that appeared in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for the years 1880-1913, 1918, 1919, 1942-1945, and 1992-2000 (more years are being added all the time, so keep checking back with them). The cost for copies is 25 cents per page from microfilm/fiche and 15 cents if from paper (most are from microfilm/fiche). There is also a $1.00 charge for postage and handling.

Due to the overwhelming response by our genealogical community of researchers, it is requested by the library to please limit requests to no more than 10 items at one time in order for the library staff to help larger numbers of genealogists in a reasonable amount of turnaround time. You may send your request for the copies of obituaries and burial permits via email and they will send you an invoice.

If you have tried to get copies from other libraries across the country, you know that 25 cents per page is a very reasonable price! Please support the wonderful work of the staff at the St. Louis Public Library by sending a donation to the Genealogy Department either along with your invoice for payment, or any time as a matter of fact, to:
    Brenda McDonald
    Director, Central & Regional Services
    St. Louis Public Library
    1301 Olive Street
    St. Louis, MO 63103
    (314) 539-0348
And, of course, a message of thanks and acknowledgement to the staff is always appreciated. (PLEASE NOTE: Since this website has gotten more publicity in recent months, the number of requests are up and response time has slowed somewhat. PLEASE....be patient and appreciative of the efforts of the St. Louis Public Library genealogy, reference desk, and microfilm staffs!)
